A young lieutenant who was involved in returning the refugees later became the DCSI (Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence) to the Berlin Brigade, '78-'81. I took several college courses from him. The stories are chilling. He knew in his heart what was happening, and arranged for several of his charges to mysteriously disappear from the trains, never to be seen again east of the Oder.

Sometimes politicians make really stupid decisions. I'm glad that this lieutenant was able to save some of those refugees.

thanks for sharing that, HiJinx. When I first began looking for the book (my uncle asked me to find it for him) I had some trouble finding information about Operation Keelhaul. Now I see that there is a lot more information available on the net with regard to what happened. I wish all the vets knew it was there and it is being talked about. My uncle figures that no one cares, and he hates the revised histories that come out of the political arena. It's up to all of us to carry on the stories of that generation.
