I recall naval fire was indeed considered more horrible than bombing by the Wehrmacht infantry.
As you got beyond eight miles in only 8" or larger would reach, 268 pound projectiles as I recall. Then there were some 11" cruisers, and what, six British and American battlewagons? For about five miles the 5" fire (no joke, that, 68 pound projectiles, maybe) could put about fifty tubes on target within a minute, about, well, if they were in the right place!! Six rounds a minute each.
Old technology, sure. Good stuff.
Accurately, too, of course.

Naval gunfire could also be sustained a lot longer than aerial bombbardment.
