Excellent thread today partner! Some of the pictures I had never seen before. The view of the shoreline from atop Mt. Suribachi really gives you a good idea of the height. And our Marines fought all the way from the shore to the top.
Thousands killed, many thousands more wounded unheralded yet one photograph garners the attention of a nation. At least by this controversy over the photograph the battle hasn't been forgotten and the photograph does instill a great deal of pride.
I don't believe you can see this photo and not be reminded of the sacrifices given throughout WWII and even other wars. It turns out to be an excellent reminder.
