Our local paper had a story with a large photo of the flagraising on it's 50th anniversary.

I cut it out & mailed it to a Joe Rosenthal I found in the SF phonebook, then living in the avenues (I had heard Rosenthal of Iwo Jima fame had attended my alma mater USF after the war & surmised this might be the same one).

Darned if I did get the photo back a few months later, autographed. I don't even know if he's still alive at this point, but the photo is now a treasured possession of mine.

I'm jealous, I'd treasure that picture too. As far as I know he's still alive, none of his biographies list a date of death.

I have been searching the net in reference to getting my fathers name recognized for his achievement on Iwo Jima and came across your reply. I was wondering if you could tell me if USF stands for Univ. of South Florida? I too am an alumni and was curious. Thank you for any help.
