A simple matter of math. Huck's rise further splits the base of the pro-war candidates, and to a lesser extent, anti-liberty candidates. This leaves Paul alone as a uniquely different choice. A fragmented field provides the best opportunity for Paul to get coverage and serious attention because it makes it more difficult for the media and voters to dismiss him as bottom tier. It is now almost impossible to cut him out of the debates on that rationale.
Because Paul is leading Thompson and/or is tied with with McCain in several states, he increasingly has claim to the top tier. In fact, now the only truly bottom tier candidates are Tancredo and Hunter.
I see why others were cheering Huckabee on a few days ago. It’s a sort of Mutually Assured Destruction thing.
