We’re deep into the Great Litany at our church and dreading the arrival of Maundy Thursday and what follows so you’re jumping the gun a bit but I’ll go with it. With 60 years of piloting under my belt I’m more impressed with a depiction of Our Lord’s ascension in a horizontal plane; arms outstretched, eyes upward, and surrounded by heaven’s hosts. Forget the straight up rocket ship stuff.

you’re jumping the gun a bit

I make no attempt to relate the posting of these threads to holy days. The timing is entirely coincidental as I proceed sequentially from Genesis through Revelation.

The question of the nature of the Risen Lord's ascent carries interest for me also. The details of His manner of soaring which you describe are inscrutable to us and thus are fodder for artistic conjecture.

But I am drawn to speculate as to His pure enjoyment of it as it occurred: a new adventure for the GodMan, air rushing past, earth diminishing, angels welcoming, anticipation of His new role...and, perhaps above all else, His hilarious profound satisfaction that It Is Finished. Since as our high priest He can empathize with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15), so now we can vicariously sense our Brother's joy.

Dore' is known mostly to me in his engravings. Very striking to see his command of color. Tintoretto is magnificent as well - such swirling motion! Ford Madox Brown has grappled (fairly successfully I think) with the *transition* from one world to the next. And Blake is as always the master of his particular inward vision.
