Well-argued, Alba. Coupled with Jesus’ pronouncement that “It would be better for him if he had not been born”, the Bible paints a bleak fate for the unbelieving Judas.
Certainly dramatic effect and also to to tell the viewers how to recognize him. Often, even seated at the table, he is shown hiding a bag of money in his hand or he has been portrayed exiting the scene with a nefarious expression . To tell the story to the more illiterate crowds, artists had to be rather obvious.
yeah i’m not sure if it’s clear why he committed suicide- was it only because he felt guilt for betraying a ‘friend’? or did he realize that he betrayed Christ the Lord and couldn’t live with it?
I’ve seen arguments for both sides, some saying he did accept Christ- but i don’t think their arguments hold much water- if any-

Yep that’s true- paintings are sometimes kinda hokey in how obvious the ‘story-telling’ is- but still good works of art nonetheless-
Whatever the outcome for Judas, it is a certainty that we will be surprised at the presence of many in heaven—and, no doubt, that many will be surprised at our presence there.
