A far-too-common malady. True understanding requires more than mere openness to the Spirit's leading, as you suggested, because that itself depends upon a regenerated heart. There are more than a few artists who obviously and convincingly demonstrate both--and many more who do not.
To clarify: I’m not disputing your point but merely amplifying it.
Likewise.
I’ve seen it. It’s in the Vatican museum. It’s the most famous version of the transfiguration. Magnificent but yes I agree with your take on it.
My! There are a lot of good paintings. My clear favorite is #19 William Hole. I love how the light of Christ casts shadows behind the apostles.
I also like Dore #2, for achieving similar effect with a wood carving. Than there’s Raphael, #13 who breaks the six figure composition of many of these paintings, with all the apostles and the man and his deaf mute son appealing for healing at the bottom of the mountain.
To me, it's like Christmas every day, opening dozens of artists' gifts.
He certainly had amazing draftsmanship, color and brush techniques. But when I looked at the overall picture, the partially undraped woman appeared more illuminated than the Christ. What a shame; it could have been surpassingly magnificent if he had added illumination around the edges of the three divine figures, especially since the light source was behind them—there should have been light catching all the edges of the white garments, and seeming to make them translucent.
It's possible that due to the aging of the oil paint, the entire piece has yellowed or dulled, and the digital reproduction we saw in the thread may have been touched up via photoshop; but that still doesn't account for the woman being brighter than the Christ, even due to the contrast of her being surrounded by dark tones.
He had one job...
