As usual, the comments are educational and informative. Thank you all!
Here’s my 2 cents.
The most striking feature of this story is here:
Luke 7:1-3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.
Note these extraordinary facts:
1. The elders of the Jews came to Jesus at the centurion’s request.
2. The elders pleaded for Jesus to come and heal the servant, arguing for his piety because he built a synagogue for them.
Some have already noted the centurion’s social prominence, having a servant. This shows he also had discretionary money to spend in building a synagogue. If he wasn’t a full proselyte, he was very close and a believer in the God of Israel.
3. Jesus responds to the request of the elders. This is one of the few times Jesus and the synagogue elders have been in agreement.
4. Jesus coming to heal his servant was too much for the centurion. He knew by faith it wasn’t necessary. He had complete faith in Jesus’ power to heal. ‘Just give the word.’
5. Note the centurion works through others: he sends the elders to Jesus and then his servant to stop Jesus from coming to his home.
Thanks. When I read the text, an image builds in my mind. Seeing art that conveys the text without distraction or sideline thought is difficult. I recognize it’s highly variable, and personal/individual.
The Chosen.
No, I have not heard of it.
How would I find this series?
Scripture chronicles several centurions interacting with Jesus and early Christians. While Jesus' flogger is one, most are portrayed positively, as here: the one who realized, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”; Cornelius; and the one who stayed his hand from flogging Paul. The wonderful recent film Risen featured a centurion as its protagonist.
The producers are planning seven seasons of eight episodes each (56 in all). We are awaiting the final three episodes of Season 2--S2E6 airs on Wednesday. DO NOT watch it until you have seen the first thirteen episodes. Subtitles are available.
You will see Jesus only briefly during the first two episodes, as they build the background and introduce characters. That is largely what distinguishes The Chosen from every other two-hour film about Jesus: with 56 episodes, they have PLENTY of time to imagine what it must have been like to actually be Jesus' disciple. Which is why you will love it--along with millions of us globally.
Which brings up another distinctive: to date, they have raised $30 million in donations. It is entirely crowd-funded. They're raising $15 million for Season 3 and have $8M already.
The final distinctive is the Holy Spirit. He is clearly in charge of everything. But you can decide that for yourself.

... the expansion out of the sight of God (until one day he would again see them) began with the taking of the daughters of King Zedekiah to Egypt and then to the Isles of the North and West to grow, and grow, and grow as the lost sheep; the Ten Tribes..... It's an amazing complete story that is almost never taught by churches but is in their Bible.
Have a great day.
Thanks.
