...."wouldn’t be having some of the problems they have today."...

If you look at the locations of the areas that still had Nephilim when Joshua stopped fighting, that is exactly where we have trouble today. Gaza is one of them.I believe Bashan was located in the Golan Heights.

The reason Christians don't understand a God that would require the death of everything that breathes doesn't understand what Nephilim were and why the Flood was called for.

If you look up the term "Utterly destroy" you will see that they were to be killed, stacked in a pile and set fire, and then be covered in rocks. Villages that weren't "utterly destroyed" just had soldier aged men destroyed.

I don’t think God ordered the complete destruction of all the groups in the land of Canaan, but He did order the complete destruction of some of them. I believe they were Nephilim. When the spies returned from spying on the land, they said there were giants (Nephilim) in the land. Indeed there were. A major gnome problem.
Many say there was great sin in the ante diluvian world. Indeed there was, but if sin was the only problem, maybe God should destroy the world, every so often. No, it was FAR FAR worse than we can imagine. I believe the Nephilim were living, breathing abominations, who never should existed in the first place, and the Flood was brought on the earth, to kill off the Nephilim. 😁

Num_21:2 So Israel made a vow to the Lord, and said, "If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities."

Deu_7:2 and when the Lord your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.

Deu_12:2 You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree.

Deu_20:17 but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite, just as the Lord your God has commanded you,

Jos_11:20 For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Jdg_21:11 And this is the thing that you shall do: You shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has known a man intimately."

1Sa_15:3 Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.' "

1Sa_15:9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.

1Sa_15:18 Now the Lord sent you on a mission, and said, 'Go, and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.'

2Ch_20:23 For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

When you see the phrase "utterly destroy" in Scripture, God is saying to kill them, stack them in a pile and burn them, then stack rocks on top of the ash. These places had Nephilim in them or were run by Nephilim. They had the ability to edit DNA to change what God had designed and created. Even the women that weren't virgins might have Nephilim seed in them. Their livestock could be altered. God wanted to make sure they didn't spread demon seed amongst God's people. The names listed here all had giants in their tribes.

Much of the Laws God stated were to show that the Nephilim did it so the Hebrews couldn't do it. After the Flood, God allowed eating meat, but it must be dead and have the blood drained and meat cooked because the Nephilim ate animals alive without cooking. They were cannibals with people. Pretty much everything God said was an abomination, the Nephilim did and He didn't want His people to copy it.
