I looked that word up because I’ve never heard it before. Now I know why.
And Catholics say that they do not worship Mary...
Where does this involve Catholics?
As a aside, I always figured Matthew 23:9 was `edited’ by England’s fire-breathing (and `odd’) King James I into his own version in order to put a burr under the saddle of Rome’s Church.
But no. There it is in the Douay-Rheims Bible:
https://www.bible.com/bible/55/mat.23.9-12.drc1752#!
“9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.”
I suppose this will stir things up, but there it is.
And Catholics say that they do not worship Mary...
No, worship is for G-d alone.
But Holy Mother, Mary ! The most Beautiful of all Creatures !
Ever Faithful! We LOVE her !
Catholicism elevates Mary to the same as Christ. Heresy.
She was not assumed into Heaven, she died like everyone else.
She was not a perpetual virgin, she had many children. James was one of them.
She is not the “Mother of God”, she gave birth to Yeshua, God incarnate.
She did not heal the sick, give sight to the blind, feed the masses, nor change water into wine. Jesus paid her no special honor when she came looking for him, only ensuring she was taken care of after his death.
Sheesh. You need to put that bottle down.
No bottle. Just truth.
But this thread is the Orthodox teaching. There are plenty of opportunities for you to rant against the Catholic teaching on other threads.
To an Orthodox Christisn, the title “Mother of God” (or even better: “Theotokos” - birthgiver of God) means exactly: “she gave birth to Yeshua, God incarnate.”
The title Theotokos is an affirmation of the incarnation much more than a statement about Mary.
Additionally, Orthodox Christians affirm that she died. Dormition means “falling asleep”.
You didn’t read the article, did you?
It appears that the Greek Orthodox followers share the abominable heresies of the Roman Catholic Church when it come to exalting Mary.
The Bible does not exalt Mary. It exalts Christ.
Notice how the article capitalizes Her and She as if Mary was a deity. And indeed they do treat her like a god. They offer incense, flowers, etc. They bow to the images of her supposed likeness.
They desecrate the apostolic ordinance originally delivered by Christ to remember Him with bread and the cup, and rob Him of His glory by remembering her instead.
And beyond all their other offenses in this regard, they pervert the Gospel of Christ to promote salvation through Mary. The Bible pronounces a severe curse on those who preach such false gospels. Those who proclaim such false gospels are more certain to enter the flames of hell than the Muslims and atheists who at least realize they are not followers of Jesus and could possibly be brought to repentance. The false gospel preachers are stubbornly determined to continue on their trek to hell and seem determined to bring as many as possible with them.
The true Mary, Mother of Jesus our Lord (she is not the mother of our Heavenly Father or the Holy Spirit, and thus not the “Mother of God”), would tear her clothes, cover herself in ashes, and weep endlessly if God had permitted her to see the idolatry these groups have done in her name.
I did read the article. Theotokos is Greek for "Mother of God". Not God incarnate.
Dormition means assumed bodily into Heaven:
"Dormition is the Roman Catholic teaching concerning the death of Mary and states that Mary died but that her body did not see corruption and was instead bodily assumed into Heaven." - CARM Dormition
No knowledgeable Orthodox Christian has *EVER* taught that Mary is the mother of the Trinity.
On a more irenic note, One translation (or more correctly interpretation) I have heard of Theotokos is: “Mother of the One who is God”.
I can live with that.
Worship requires sacrifice. Point to a single instance in history when anyone offered sacrifice to Mary.
Sally is the mother of Sam.
Sam is a fireman.
Sally is the mother of a fireman.
Mary is the mother of Jesus.
Jesus is God.
Mary is the mother of God.
One of these times you should just change all the article references about being Orthodox to Catholic. Then, around post 700 in the ensuing thread tell everyone what you did. Then watch the thread die in 20 posts or so. Maybe wait until April 1st to try it.
Freegards
Are you serious?
[41] And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: [42] And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. [43] And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? [44] For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. [45] And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
[46] And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord. [47] And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. [48] Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. [49] Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. [50] And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. Luke Chapter 1.
How do you as a Catholic deal with the fact that many people in the New Testament receive the same blessing (eulogeo) that Mary received, but aren’t given the same special reverence in the historical church?
I’m not interested in the religious flame wars, just interested in your opinion.
None of the others bore the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
