Nobody I know has banded together to ignote you. It just happened naturally.
Do you know the meaning of the phrase “theologicsl putging”?
Uh, no I don't...I couldn't even find it in the dictionary...
LOLOL
Isaiah 45:1
Would you say that Cyrus's anointing came from his true and abiding faith in the Holy One of Israel?
All, y'all: sick and tired, no, really. I'll come back later.
Remember: Speak the truth in LOVE
You have obviously missed the point of the discussion.
No need to ping me to your views and opinions on these matters.
I’m taking your advice on your posts and not relying on a fallible man.
ppfffttt.....
1 Corinthians 1:18-31
18For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written,
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart."
20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31so that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord."
The *ancient wisdom* will take you right to hell as will all the wisdom of man.
The only *ancient wisdom* one should count on is the wisdom of the Ancient of Days. The wisdom of God trumps all and He told us all about it in His Scripture.
Well, you postulated that i had a wrong motive a few days ago in response to my posts, but no, i had no idea, and i really doubt that is why many others use it here, and you are the first and only Roman Catholic (almost did it again) i have read who objected to this with this explanation.
Rather than it being used to insult, my only purpose it that saves redundant typing (my stiff fingers being one reason) and reading, as does “Prot,” which i use as well among other abbreviations for often used terms), for the same reason.
Due to certain differences (like with the present subject), it is often fitting to make a distinction btwn Catholic and Roman Catholic. I know papist or Romanist is seen as objectionable, and some even object to Roman Catholic (though it has officially been used). Latin Catholic has been suggested, but who would guess what LC means?
I do not want to use RC (i knew a kid named that once) if it really is crass, but i really do not think many Catholics even know the history you give of the term, and meanings change, but if you have a suggestion for an abbreviation you can propose it.
Understood, thanks.
I haven't banded together with anyone. There are just a number of the anti-Catholics I simply will not acknowledge or reward with any kind of response or attention. They include those UFO-logists, militant Judaizers, those with a history of false claims and accusations, those who use the Forum to insult and attack, those who refuse to acknowledge simple historical fact and those who manipulate the dialog to show just how very special and holy they think they are compared to every Catholic that ever lived.
When one excerpts a single verse condemning wisdom and represents it as the definitive biblical statement on the entire subject of wisdom in a perverse attempt to show just how wise they believe they are there is no point in even attempting any kind of real dialog.
My advice, like I used to tell my kids when we passed the homeless crack addicts on the street, "just don't make eye contact".
but missing the point is one of my specials kills for which I am so justly famous.
However, whatever the 'point' is, if one of the arguments on which it is based has a flaw, it's not irrelevant to note the flaw. If Cyrus can be a christ, then Obama, even Obama, can do good works appointed by God without saving faith in the God in whose hands he is and w-ho directs his actions.
You, as it were, fired one gun in your battery. I wasn't going for the whole battery, much less to occupy the field. I just took a potshot at the one gun, since it seemed exposed and defenseless.
However valid your reasons for seeking to take the field, you won't get it by firing guns so exposed to counter-fire, IMHO.
This is funny. Catholics get irritated by flaming, we’re thin-skinned. Prots get their widdo feewings hurted by being ignored, and accuse Catholcs of a conspiracy to ignore them.
Actually, that’s not a bad idea....
And that's the problem with works.
Matthew 9:9-13 9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.
10And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 12But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."
All the works in the world aren't going to help you if your heart isn't right.
The Pharisees had the works. Paul even attests to that himself, and he doesn't count on them. Even keeping the Law perfectly wasn't enough to save either Paul or the Pharisees.
Philippians 3:1-11 1Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.
2Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. 3For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh 4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
7But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
If the Law, which God established, was incapable of saving anyone, then no system of works that men dream up and install in the place of the Law is going to do any better.
Works of any kind, no matter how good we judge them to be based on outward appearances, CANNOT atone for sin. Atonement is only by the shedding of blood, not by performance of a *to do* list.
Um, that horse doesn’t look too good ....
LOL!
I can’t believe any of you have actually read the sheep and goats passage. It was the sheep who did the good works, not the goats, ns i was the sheep which were rewarded. The goats, who did NOTeed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the sick and imprisoned, were sent to hell.
I’m starting to think this may be a deliberate twisting of Christ’s words.I’m also starting to think there may be no widh for n\honest discourse.
RomeoCharlie? Royal Crown? Mackeral-snappers?
I’m sorry, being ill makes me giddy.
That we are in the Spirit is true, as that we are seated together in heaven, (Eph. 2:6) but that does mean we have not a flesh to crucify by walking in the Spirit, overcoming evil with good, and i do not think you were denying this.
“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1)
The dividing issue with purgatory is not that were are not to crucify the flesh by setting our affection on things above, which i fall short in, and do better some days than others (do i love God more than food, etc., and whatever is our prime object of heart affection and or source of security is our god), or that holiness must be an attribute of saving faith, but that we see in Scripture this sanctification either taking place on earth - which is where we are tested, as Christ was - or not at all, and you either die with saving faith (which is what makes us accepted in the Beloved, thus motivating and enabling holiness) or we do not.
The texts which clearly refer to the postmortem place of believers only shows them going to be with the Lord at death, and at the day of Christ being rewarded for their service.
In contrast, the doctrine of purgatory has believers undergoing purgation for sin upon death, and being rewarded with entrance into glory after that process, which some posit can take thousands of years.
This has been argued out much in the posts linked to in post 518 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/2796560/posts?page=518#518
“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.” (Ps. 116:5)
“To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” (Rm. 3:26)
To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus
