Well my undersatanding is before Vatican 2 it was true that the catholic church claimed itself as the only church whereby one could be saved...that apart from the catholic church people were damned. But Vatican 2 changed that????

No, not particularly... but it isn't a hard premise to discover.

It's just another area of the abyss that is my ignorance.

Are you a Christian?

Absolutely. Although others would probably disagree.

Now, that's intriguing.

Jesus also said of the Pharisees that one should do as they say but not as they do. I don't think it follows from what H said of them that he was against all of their "traditions of men." He was very much against the traditions that worked against piety and justice, like "Corban."

ref=e-Sword: Compare

(KJV) All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

(KJV+) AllG3956 thereforeG3767 whatsoeverG3745 G302 they bidG2036 youG5213 observe,G5083 that observeG5083 andG2532 do;G4160 butG1161 doG4160 notG3361 ye afterG2596 theirG846 works:G2041 forG1063 they say,G3004 andG2532 doG4160 not.G3756

ref=e-Sword: Strong's Concordance

G2036
ἔπω
epō
ep'-o
A primary verb (used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from G2046, G4483 and G5346); to speak or say (by word or writting): - answer, bid, bring word, call, command, grant, say (on), speak, tell. Compare G3004.

The word "they" is implied, and the word "bid" is past tense:

"All therefore whatsoever they [Moses' seat (Moses) had] bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their (the Pharisees') works: for they say, and do not (they do not follow Moses)."

Jesus cannot be telling people to follow others against the Torah. That is just silly.

If a thin skinned Freeper hangs around the open RF thread wailing about the offenses, he is in effect putting blood in the water which invariably results in an even more frenzied and broader offense. It is flame baiting and hurts his own side of the debate in the town square format.

Agreed and there are a bunch of folks, some on our side, sorry to say that devolve into that mindset. Appreciate the cat herding, or paramecia herding, as the case may be that you do. We'll try to rein in our thenthitive typeths perhaps a little better than we have done in the past.

Am feeling a very subtle but significantly above average alertness, wariness, premonitional sort of something today.

Maybe the lot of you are about to see the light of God Almighty and turn Catholic. But that would be a miracle indeed...

I did notice some new noise down the block last evening from high volume car music machine.

A Mossberg 500 in pistol grip with magnum shells of slug alternating with 0-0-0 shot has postive effects on the speakers.

You're making some deductive leaps that would do Superman proud.

I was thinking more of Homer Simpson.

If I recall, Jesus was rather severe in His denunciations of the traditions of men that violated the Word of God. He denounced them with warnings of serious judgment.

Then we are on the same wavelength. When are you going to become Catholic and renounce Charistmatic Pentecostalism? I'd like to record it for posterity.

Nowhere did the Hebrew Scriptures instruct the Jews to set up the Sanhedrin, to submit to the teachings of the scribes and Pharisees, or to recognize the authority of oral Tradition alongside Scriptures.

The scribes and Pharisees had not received their authority from God. Which is why Jesus said, "The scribes and Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses" (Matt. 23:2.

Which is why a showdown was inevitable. (Matt. 15:1-9) and (Mark 7:1-13). Jesus Christ refused to subject His ministry to the Sanhedrin, the scribes and the Pharisees, or Tradition.

"Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, "this people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men." (Mark 7:6,7).

He just wasn't into pious hypocrisy and the merging of the 'unwritten Torah' or oral Tradition with the 'written Torah' or Scripture.

It didn't work then, and it doesn't work now.

Scriptures tells us Joseph was not intimidate[d] with Mary UNTIL AFTER the birth of Jesus.

I think that's true for all guys. (just kidding :0)

1. Can you identify the "fathers"? 2. What is meant by "unanimous" consent of the fathers?

The fathers can be Bishops, Popes,Clergy etc.. and unanimous consent is generally(but not always) done at Church councils on matters of faith and morals. Mostly it's just to confirm what the Church has always taught on these issues, but there is sometimes a need to make them concretely written to fight off heresies that arise and protect the flock

How have you been, dear OR? It's been a long time from when I last heard from you.

I wrote that it certainly wasn't thought so in any de Fide way before 1854 OR we wouldn't have waited until 1854 to get the encyclical.

Let me see if I understand this. Somehow the proposition that Mary needed to be immaculate is somehow dependent upon the time in which it is published in an encyclical?

Why would the proposition be dependent upon being published in a Romanist encyclical? Wouldn't the proposition be either true or false irregardless of when Romanists decided to publish a ruling?

I never realized how seriously you guys took the "bind on earth...bind in heaven" such that it could change the nature of a proposition.

Of course you might miss your exit, cause an accident, or otherwise become a hazard to all others who share the road with you. :-) or :-(

I miss my first exit at least once a week, so it doesn't bother me anymore. The Good Lord has spared me the experience of deer and accidents since moving here half a decade ago. Will it continue? Beats me. I don't believe that I am a wandering hazard since I really do stay in the center of the lane with the cruise control on. But who's to say? The poor folks who share the road with me?

At any rate, I'm not talking on my cell phone, texting, eating, smoking and putting on makeup all at once. And reading a newspaper. Those folks really do need dealing with.

THE SHOCKING AND GROSSLY ABSURD WHOLESALE DEARTH--GREATLY LACKING INTELLECTUAL STATURE, INTEGRITY on the part of such a huge percentage [93-97%?] of the RC's hereon. I would never have guessed it even possible, much less chronic. Even after so many years of it--I'm persistently EMBARRASSED--for them!

It puts colour in your pasty cheeks. It looks good.
