Tears come to my eyes every time I read this one paragraph penned by Scott Hahn. It's how I feel at every Mass. I am in Christ's personal presence through the blessed Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

I have attended many mainline Protestant services and they have generally been quite pleasant (although "different"), in fact the single best homily I have EVER heard was delivered by an Episcopalian minister. However, I always have left with the profound sense that something was missing, and that is the Real Presense of our Lord.

Oh, I don't know; we Orthodox still call it that.

Well, the Church of Rome was considered the first See of Christendom from very, very early on. When the Fathers declared the Bishop of Rome to be the first among equals of the patriarchs, they weren't proclaiming anything new or innovative. The Latin Church asserts that this is because of +Peter. Orthodoxy asserts this is because Rome was the capitol of the Empire. I'm Orthodox, so I ascribe to the latter. That seems to make sense in light of the fact that +Peter was bishop of +Antioch before he ever went to Rome. One would think that that fact would, in Latin Church reasoning, make the Patriarch of Antioch the first among equals of The Church, but of course he isn't.

At any rate, the deference shown to Rome for 800-900 years after Pentecost seems to have stemmed from two things; first its recognition as the first See by the Council at Nicea and second, and far more importantly, its comparatively consistent theological orthodoxy during that period. Things began coming apart for the West under the influence of the Franks, a prime excample of which was their insistence on the filioque innovation, an insistence to which Rome eventually subcumbed. While Roman Popes had certainly been jealous of their real or imagined perogatives as the first among equals and zealous in their exercise, it really wasn't until the Popes began trying to impose innovative Frankish theology on the East that the Great Schism became inevitable. In all honesty, UC, its Charlemagne the Protestants should look to rather than Constantine for an imperial source of "Roman Catholicism". What is fascinating, though, is that today it seems the Latin Church is ready to move "back" to the role it played in the pre Schism Church. If that happens, a new, true Ecumenical Council can be held to deal with the dogmas which have arisen in the West since the 7th Ecumenical Council.

Many Catholics leave your church for just the opposite reason...

Many Catholics leave because they have no idea what the Catholic faith teaches. And yes, sadly, they are deficient in the Bible knowledge. I can only come back to the squishy American bishops, but in truth it also falls upon the Church militant.

Any many Protestants leave for Rome or Eastern Orthodoxy because they see the Church of the Apostles and Church Fathers there. They see the Traditional Church of the First Christians.

As with other Protestants of this particular stripe (most Protestants are not like this), I see an individual with no joy or humility but only hate, loathing, a warped sense of self-importance, and an ill tongue. He does not carry the message or the hope of Jesus Christ. All I can do is pray for his (their) eyes to opened.

I agree that the Orthodox (and Eastern Catholic) churches have much that's of value to all of us.

Kolokotronis persuaded me to attend a Greek Orthodox devotion last Lent. Lovely people over at St. Nektarios The Wonder Worker ... although I thought the roof would fall in when my daughter suggested that their liturgy needed an electric guitar!

At "Rhema Bible Center" in Broken Arrow, OK, they collected a 20% "tithe" from the congregation. If members didn't pay, they'd be invited to become members elsewhere, as it were.

But the first thing a Catholic will find in the Bible is that he can't buy his way out of hellfire ... (what chapter and verse, I wonder?)

Good sermon at Mass, I think. What I heard was good, but baby discovered Baby Jesus in the windows and started yelling "Hi Baby" to Him. So, I was sort of distracted.
