There is one, true, guaranteed, method of increasing numbers. I know, I have made 9 Jews and they have made 14 more.

God bless you and your beautiful family!!

I am being serious about this question, but do Jews believe in animal sacrifice? You keep on reading about Jews in the old testament having to sacrifice animals for forgiveness, so I was wondering if this practice still continues. I suppose I could ask my future father-in-law who is Jewish, but the question might not go over so well.

If you're going to eat meat, slaughter the animal first. Don't cut a chunk of meat out of a living cow and "save the rest for later."

What it means, don't be cruel to animals, but it's OK to eat them.

Since the order of sacrifice could only be brought at the Temple in Jerusalem, and the Temple has been destroyed, the order of sacrifice has been discontinued. The rabbis ordained a prayer service as an offering of the heart, in place of the actual sacrifices.

An octopus would grow the limb back.

Sure ... so would a starfish. And if you eat half an earthworm, the other half will grow back into a whole worm ...

But seriously: Does anybody do this? Historically, has this practice ever been socially acceptable anywhere?

Thanks for the clarification on that subject.

I don't know - seems improbable, although there's the famous joke about the amazing, life-saving pig.

The Masai live partly on blood from their cattle, as well as milk. That's not the same as eating off a limb, though.

NYer: "God bless you and your beautiful family!!"

I second NYer's sentiments!

Thanks. That makes sense, and goes along with the whole idea of having dominion over the earth ... But seriously: has "cut[ting] a chunk of meat out of a living cow and 'save[ing] the rest for later'" ever been a problem anywhere? On the one hand, I've heard of some really wierd culinary practices, particularly in the Far East (but never that). On the other hand, Biblical prohibitions tend to have a discernible basis in somebody's documented misbehaviour.

I eat gummi-bears one limb at a time, but they're not alive.

Looks like a lot of Koreans violate that Noachide law.

They really love eating a live, baby octopus... whole.

Love them or hate them, respect them or loathe them – and most people have at least one of these reactions – of all the world's groups, none receives as much attention, including hatred, as the Jews.

I don't know - conservative Christians are giving them a run for the money.

There was probably a lot of that going on during Noah's time, before the Flood. ;)
