I read the passages in the context of the book in which they were written and had never thought to assume such. I will study them further.
That is the kind of interpretation that leads to cultic concepts, trying to take passages of one book out of the context of the whole of Scripture.
Scripture has an immediate context and a local context of the book being studied, but can never be lifted out of the context of the entirety of Scripture.
Perhaps the straw man you're constructing believes this but I do not.
How is that a strawman?
It's no strawman at all, the Elect are obedient because they have been regenerated and restored to a right standing with God on account of the Atonement of Christ, becoming a new creation with a re-born spirit bent toward the righteousness of God. Obedience has not part in salvation and regeneration, it is the result of salvation and regeneration, as Ephesians 2:8-10 says.
