He didn't come up with lame excuse like "I took the pills, but I didn't swallow". I consider the "I can't comment until I know all the facts" explanation rather lame.

So he got pushed. He didn't want to be pushed. He didn't want to be outed and forced to admit his weakness... But when he was pushed he made a choice. Hopefully it will save him.
