Suggestions for a better Free Republic

I was just wondering if any of you have any suggestions for how to make Free Republic easier to use and a better place in general. This is NOT a criticism of Jim Robinson and I am most appreciative of all his hard work. This site is great and I enjoy coming here to learn about and discuss the conservative issues of the day. This is just my desire to see this site become more "viewer-friendly" than it is in its present iteration. I've had thoughts over the years about this and these are the ones that I keep coming back to:
1. Different background colors for alternating posts within a thread, for readability
2. Ability to set up chat rooms for certain events, rather than using the "Live Thread" concept. The entire idea of a "Live Thread" is somewhat of an oxymoron and EXTREMELY difficult to follow.
3. Smilies and other icons available when posting messages
4. Keeping track of numbers of posts by each user. Many forum sites do this, and some even give titles to users who reach certain posting milestones.
5. The ability to mark a thread for later reading, rather than having to "bump" the thread

Wille Brown is currently Mayor of San Francisco
He was the Speaker of the House for California
He is a classic red diaper doper baby
He allowed his office to be the Sandinistas hdqtrs on the west coast
He supports every 'Liberation' movement going(read-communist/socialist)
Get the idea?
I am amazed if he is part of the transition team, I need to confirm this.

At this point? You ask, and if someone is around and not busy, they respond?

You can type your replies into a word processing or Email software that has spell check, and copy / paste them into the FR reply window.

My one big technical criticism is that interesting threads scroll off too quickly, before commentary has a chance to accumulate. The chronological most current threads contain too many duplications. Would it be possible to sort the threads by activity, rather than by time, keeping the most active threads on top? Hopefully this will help:
In the News/Activism window, at the top and to the far right of your screen you should see the following links:
Threads | Messages
If you click on the word "Messages", you will be able to view threads listed by the most recent post.
Clicking on the word "Threads" will list each thread by the time the initial article or comment was posted.

If you bump threads to read later, anyone on FR can see what you bumped by looking at the individual threads or looking at your My Comments page (
cf post #13, above). So you could bookmark and delete them after you are no longer interested.
Another alternative would be to store the thread URL's in your Links or Favorites on your Internet browser.

You can type your replies into a word processing or Email software that has spell check, and copy / paste them into the FR reply window. Pain in the butt if you do a lot of replies. I rather just click on the button in the reply page.

How about a fundraising function like moveon.org? FR rapidly raises money in its "FReepathons", so why not use that fundraising prowess to finance ads (print, tv, radio, etc.) that rebut the left's fallacious assertions?

You can type your replies into a word processing or Email software that has spell check, and copy / paste them into the FR reply window. Be careful with that, CSS (style attributes) are not allowed on FR so any advanced text formatting may be ignored.

3. Smilies and other icons available when posting messages You've got to be kidding. I hope you're a girl because those little smilies are (imo) pretty gay.
I have a great suggestion for making things better though:
DONATE monthly. Help do away with the Quarterly fundraiser. Every little bit helps.

Thanks for the info.
I have been pressing John about that editor. I have it in place but he has some reservations about cross browser compatibility. Basically, if it aint IE, it aint going to work. The newest Mozilla works with it though.
