North America's Fastest Production Cars

The following is a list we've compiled of the fastest accelerating production cars and trucks built by any major manufacturer for the North American market.  Although the list includes a lot of newer prestige vehicles that cannot be defined as 'classic' or 'muscle' cars, they are definitely collectors and destined to be classics. The data was compiled from the results of independent tests conducted by several major publications in the U.S. and Canada.*  We've simply taken the quickest quarter mile elapsed times and listed them in order from quickest to slowest. We didn't bother including any vehicles with a quarter mile time of more than 14 seconds.  Trivial?  Yes, but still intriguing.  Why?  We did it simply to satisfy your curiosity.  Accurate?  Not necessarily.*  That largely depends on possibly hundreds of factors that need to be taken into account during testing, including weather, altitude, drivers, traction, etc.

Dodge know how to make a big engine, the 426 hemi, but they simply haven't been able to design a car and suspension etc around it. I sure wouldn't want to go very fast in a Dodge Dart and expect to turn it.

Funny, if you expand this worldwide, you could put a production car with a 1.8l, 177hp normally aspirated engine just above the Corvette GS and Ferrari Daytona.

I owned a Barracuda once, but I guarantee it wasn't the one at the top of this list. Seems like whenever I have a dream involving cars, it is that old Barracuda.

I doubt it. The Firebird had the exact same engine as the GTO and weighed a lot less. I had a '67 and I think it was quicker than the goat.

I used to drive the winner of that list, a 1968 426 Hemi Barracuda. People used to say "That car will fly" and they were not kidding; I once got the entire front end airborne at an angle by just driving it really, really fast down I-10.

And no, I don't mean a wheelie. The front end went up and STAYED up. Fortunately I was alone on a straight and flat interstate with maximum visibility...

I wasn't aware Ford made a 427. I know they made a 428 and a 429 hemi. I always thought a 427 was a Chevy.

The new Ford GT is supposed to be just a bit faster than the Viper. That list would have been even more interesting if it listed top speeds, as well.

A 2004 Maybach? The thing with recliners for rear seats? A 13.4 second quarter-mile? Damn, I'd like to see that!!!
