A Bronx cheer for The New York Times?

If you see someone wearing a Red Sox cap at Yankee Stadium, it might be an editorial writer for the paper.

It came out yesterday in favor of a World Series that would feature not the New York Yankees but the Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs, calling it "the Dream Series."

"With all due respect to our New York readership - Yankee fans among them," wrote the opinion-maker, "we find it hard to resist the emotional tug" of a Series between the two longtime losers.

Oh, the newspaper of record did leave one thing out. The Times is a part owner of New England Sports Ventures, which owns the Red Sox.

I never thought I'd root for New York, but there are some Red Sox fans (Boston expatriots) in the local bar who are psychotic loudmouths, and they just might push me in favor of the Yankees.

I'm not a baseball fan at all (not really a sports fan of any kind, for that matter) but I watched an HBO special about the "Sox" last night- really well done.

The people interviewed talked about "the curse" acquired for trading Ruth, their perfervid & indominitable loyalty to the cause, their sheer hatred for the yankees, which blinds them to taking responsibility for their own destiny, etc..

And I thought- "I got it- the palestinians are red sox fans."

I think another 100 years of failure would be appropriate for trading Babe Ruth. I hate the Yankees, but the Sox deserve to lose. The Cubbies, on the other hand, don't deserve to lose forever. I'm willing to see them get one.

I grew up as a Yankee fan, but got disgusted with Steinbrenner's antics, and now follow the Metropolitans.

But I am rooting HARD for the Bombers, in no small part because most everyone I know here is a Yankee fan, and I hate beyond words the sanctimonious hyprocrites on West 43rd Street (that's the Times for you folks in Rio Linda).

I'm kind of torn on the Sox/Cubs thing. On the one hand, I would normally root for either of them if they made the Series. I mean, on an emotional level, if either team beat the odds and made it to the Series you kinda hope they hit the whole lottery and not fall short. But if both make it, while this obviously means at least one of them will win and break their streak of bad luck, it also means that one is guaranteed beforehand to go back home with their bad luck intact- the streak unended.

I try to rectify this a bit by realizing that if you were the Cubs or the Red Sox (and their fans), the only other team and city in the Major Leagues who could possibly understand what it would mean to lose in the Series would be Chicago and Boston. So, in a way, if this Series happened, at least the loss might not hurt quite so much because you would know the other guy could at least feel your pain and perhaps you could at least be happy the other city ended its woes.

I would think this move would threaten some of the NYT's New York readership. Stupid business move IMO.

I can see it coming -- Red Sox will beat the Yankees & meet the Cubs in the World Series. The Red Sox fanatics will be convinced that this is their year. Then, they'll have the Serious won and blow it to the Cubs.

The Red Sox will NEVER get over dumping Babe Ruth!
