One third of English people living north of the border believe that Scots are anti-English, according to new research.
Further, one quarter of English-born people resident in Scotland claim they are the victims of constant discrimination and harassment because of their nationality.
A Glasgow University study of 500 English exiles found that one sixth were subjected to insults or abuse and one had even received a death threat.
Prof Bill Miller, the academic who carried out the survey, said: "One person we spoke to had received death threats to him and his children. While his children were at school they had kitchen scourers dragged down their face because they were English.
"It is a very small minority of the English-born in Scotland who are affected in this way but that is little consolation to the families in question."
The results will be presented at a conference organised to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Union of the Crowns next month.
Analysis of the sample suggested that one third of Scotland's 500,000 English population thought that the Scots were Anglophobic.
The same proportion believed they were the butt of anti-English jokes which "irritated or annoyed them". About 11 per cent said they were "hurt" by the ribbings.
The research also found that the majority of the English people living in Scotland would not let the difficulties drive them southwards. About 98 per cent felt at ease living in Scotland and 95 per cent said they had plans to settle in Scotland in the long term.
Prof Miller said: "There is a certain amount of irritation among the English-born but not at a level that would drive them out of the country."
A Scottish Executive spokesman said politicians were working to stamp out all forms of racism in Scotland.

A Scottish Executive spokesman said politicians were working to stamp out all forms of racism in Scotland. Can't anyone see the unattainability of this goal? Sheesh.

My brother and I took a bicycle trip through Scotland as teenagers, 39 years ago.
I don't know how things are now, but in those days the Scots certainly didn't like the English much. I figured they were still angry because of being conquered whenever in the past it was.
Our American accents were often mistaken for English accents by the Scots, once they figured out we were actually not English, we were treated entirely differently. They hadn't made it obvious that we were being treated badly as "Englishmen", but once it was discovered that we were American, the Scots became much friendlier, even happy to see us. Nicer rooms, nicer beds, etc., all at the same price, would suddenly become available for us.
A beautiful country.

I wonder if these investigators ever heard of the clearances?

Is there any research on how the Scottish folks living in England are treated?
If it's not Scottish it's crap.

Since when is "English" a "race"?
To: LibertyAndJusticeForAll
The Scots are simply returning the sentiments they've received:
In Samuel Johnson's Dictionary, he defined oats as a grain that in England is fed to horses, but in Scotland sustains the people.
Further, in a famous interchange with Boswell, Boswell was trying to get Johnson to say something nice about Scotland, saying something like "well, you'll agree that Scotland has many noble wild prospects (views)" -- to which Johnson replied "Sir, the noblest prospect a Scotchman ever sees is the high road that leads to England!"

...This story is from the "Telegraph" and it makes me even gladder that I am a member of the United States race.

Yep, my son attended and graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Glasgow on an exchange program a few years back. He's got lot of first person stories about how much the Scots hate the Brits.

Oh goody a whole new "victim" crusade. Just what the world needed.

Interesting.

Well, the English derive from Anglo Saxon and Norman backgrounds, while the Scots are basically Celts. So I think there are real racial differences.

It's true that the Scots don't like the English (who "steal" their oil and water.) But the place where the English are really despised is Wales. And then, of course, there is Ireland, but the Irish Republic now has a higher per capita income than England - so, they get the last laugh.
To: Floyd R Turbo
They are all Celts. Well, yes, with a bit of Roman, Scandinavian, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, French, German and God-knows-what-else thrown into the mix.
