DOES AMERICA HAVE THE GUTS?

The coming struggles...

by Tom Adkins 10/1/03

So far, our war on terrorism has featured American forces chasing the Taliban into the Afghan hills, a messy unification of domestic defenses, a quick defeat of Saddam Hussein’s paper army, and a low-level terrorist underwar in Iraq that is slowly ebbing as we rebuild that nation. But the popular conception that we are battling Arabs is quite mistaken. Today, there are 1.2 billion Muslims living in almost every country in the world, only 15% Arab. In almost every country, worldwide maniacal Muslim terrorism is, shall we say, a distinct trend. They want to kill us. And it is the greatest threat to world security this planet has ever seen.

Now, the Muslim world and the Western world are confronted with a wild card: nuclear weapons. Iran, the greatest terrorist state in existence, has finally been able to purify uranium into weapons grade, and they are refusing to cooperate with any agencies or inspectors. Why should they? Defiance has been met with hand-wringing by the United Nations, European attacks on the United States attempts to combat terrorism, and unprecidented internal American struggles between pragmatic conservatives and liberals seemingly bent on national self-immolation.

Certainly countries like North Korea and Cuba present stability threats. But communist nations are actually easier to deal with. While strident political ideology that happily rationalizes the deadly wrath of its failures may be abhorrent, it’s still rooted in self-preservation and indeed, proliferation. Survival instincts create a window of intimidation. But religious terrorism is quite another story. Muslim extremism preaches that personal demise should be met with joy. Kill yourself and Allah will greet you with 72 virgins in heaven. Indoctrinated with a disdain for the Western world, a hatred permeates Muslim culture. When the megalomaniacal mullahs come calling, volunteers are easy to find.

Yet bloodthirsty communist dictators seem to have a fine relationship with the Muslim troublemakers. Why not? They have a common enemy. And they have no rules. An Iranian nuclear device atop a North Korean-made Scud is a foreseeable reality. And that presents a set of very difficult circumstances. Iran’s neighbors must consider arming themselves to deter a first strike. This isn’t exactly the most stable region on Earth. And their leaders know it. How would you feel if you were the leader of Kuwait the day Iran announced your nation was full of infidels and had to be “cleansed with the light of God?” Driven by Al Jazeera, Reuters, CNN, and more recently by the Democrat Party, which has successfully divided America, these nations are confused by the media portrayal that America is failing in Iraq. They need to know where their support will be in 5 years. Last week, Saudi Arabia announced they were considering “nuclear options.” Who’s next?

Just as dangerous are America’s former European allies who seek to enhance their failing semi-socialist states by conducting their own anti-American diplomatic jihad. Western European states like France, Germany, and Belgium are helping the United States Iraqi mission fail by refusing to support the mission, attempting to enhance their own geopolitical position by helping George Bush fail. They dream of an American President like Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, who understoodd the proper role for the United States as the World Soup Kitchen, doling out money while surrendering our power to undeserving Euro-leeches and conniving enemies. And poor Tony Blair is still barring the door to his head-in-the-sand populous who amazingly can’t connect the craters between this war and World War II, a mere 60 years after the gargantuan embarrassment of Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement to the Nazis.

As the rest of the world subverts from the outside and the liberal press and Democrats subvert from within, the world is suspecting America may be unwilling to stand up to the pressure of fighting this unholy war. After two relatively minor wars, terrorists believe they can act with impunity. Despite all the silly talk about an “international effort,” the United States is only one nation able to fight and win the battle against worldwide terrorism. But are we willing?

Will we remove Iran’s nuclear weapons program or merely chide their insane destructive goals? Will we take out North Korea’s arsenal and its huge army or let the Chinese placate Kim Il Sung forever? Will we seal our borders from the terrorists or give them drivers licenses? Ultimately, will Americans have the wisdom and guts to take on the battle against rogue states and crazed religions or will we submit to the pain required to achieve victory?

What of America?

I say screw diplomacy.

As for a solution, mine is simple, me being a simple man.

I've got that old M-1.

Keep it clean and ready.

I'm a simple man and I'm proud to be an American.
