Sadly, I think you're missing the whole point.
The sports press DOES have a protective attitude toward black quarterbacks because they carry the usual "white guilt" for so many years of mostly white-only quarterbacks, along with their own failure to make any point of it.
This is an affirmative action story, disguised as a sports story.

I agree, and think it goes beyond that.
Rush was really standing up for the eagles defence. Clearly from the quote He felt McNabb was getting the credit for the teams success when a good portion of that belongs to the eagles defense.
There are a lot of black players on that defense, and yet what defensive player is talked about week after week, and gets the contracts, and the bumps, and the endorsements.
The very white Urlacher from the bears.
Rush was sticking up for a lot of black guys on this one.

Tell that to Randall Cunningham, another Eagles QB. He was questioned his entire career because he was a black QB. I think that Gannon and Pennington got as much play as McNabb last year. I agree that Vick got a bit too much air play, but that is because ESPN can put together a highlight reel of him single handly winning games. There are not too many folks in team sports who can do that.
