"No cyclist worth his salt needs 3 to 4 feet in order to ride."When I say "taking up 3 or 4 feet" I am including the minimal distance that I would feel comfortable having between my fender and the bicyclist. If bicyclists don't mind me getting closer than I can do that too. heh, heh, heh...

Since I don't plan on either one of us weaving all over the road, I don't see why it would be a problem for me. By the way, how close are you comfortable getting to the car in front of you? While you may be joking, the implied threat is upsetting to a cyclist. If you are joking, it's not in the best of taste. If you're not, then I guess we'll eventually see the headlines about the manslaughter trial.
One point I failed to make earlier: I don't believe that cyclists should ride, unless they are couriers or pros, on busy thoroughfares or during peak traffic periods. Personally, I ride very early in the mornings, well before traffic picks up. I also prefer to ride well outside of any city/town.
All I'm asking is a little mutual respect between people sharing the road and following the rules. For the record, I don't believe in the "I'm bigger/smaller than you, so I can do what I want" rule. I believe the aforementioned concept is a clear demonstration of stupidity and the height of inconsideration.
