That traitor, by the way, forced American soldiers to dig ditches under fire, and was only stopped from such a violation of the accepted rules of war by his Excellency, Benjamin Butler.

Lee freed the slaves his wife inheirited, he also ordered his own son to continue to fight in a battle - he didn't discriminate. Regarding your hero "Beast"/"Spoons" Butler,
