Israeli military leaders are considering an assault operation to destroy Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program, a report said Friday.
Israel's chief of staff, alarmed by the failure of the international community to move against Iran, has warned that Israel would consider unilateral action to stop the "nightmare scenario" of Teheran's development of nuclear weapons.
Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom demanded that the international community stop the program, WorldTribune.com reported.
Israel's Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Moshe Ya'alon took the rhetoric up a notch.
"At the moment there is continuing international diplomatic activity to deal with this threat, and it would be good if it succeeds," Ya'alon said. "But if that is not the case we would consider our options."
Israel has never specified what action it might take to stop Iran's nuclear weapons program, which Teheran has denied having. But Israeli officials assert that the nation's deep-strike air capability has been vastly upgraded since Israeli F-16 multi-role fighters destroyed the Iraqi reactor at Osirak in 1981.

I wonder just how deep this deep-strike capability extends.
It's only a couple of thousand miles to N. Korea isn't it?

Why in the world would Israeli officials broadcast this? It is one thing if everyone suspects it, another if it is officially confirmed. Now the Mullahs will disperse their nuke sites, fortify them more and have their armed forces on higher alert status, none of which would (to put it mildly) increase the odds of success for any Israeli (or American) operation. This is just plain stupid.

But, the IAEA already wants access to Iran's nuclear program. The mullah's know that Israel might strike. This is not a secret. In fact, I think it shows that Israel can rattle its saber, to remind Iran that they will not back down. It is posturing, at the moment. But, it doesn't mean that Israel wouldn't react in such a way, if necessary.

Not so stupid, Israeli's are probably trying to encourage/create movements on the ground so they can watch from spy satelites to refine their intelligence.

As I stated in my mid-August letter to President Bush after the Jerusalem bus bombing,
"...we support full Israeli unilateralism in securing their families and national security interests from these unconscionable butchers...."
And I just really dig on seeing Israeli Jews pulling off extremely difficult, almost impossible, both small and big, covert/overt military operations utilizing the best equipment in the world as well as fielding some of the very best/skilled/qualified people in global military culture, against people who hate them bitterly and who would kill them in a blink of an eye if they had half a chance, all the while experiencing extremely low casualty counts themselves.
Does this make me a "warmonger," "violent," and not a "peacemaker"? Ah, well. Pray for me; I'm a sinner.
Go Israel!! :-D
