Simple - because the bulk of the Arnold supporters would not go to McClintock, certainly not enough to give him a victory. Many would go to Bustamante.
McClintock supporters are most unlikely to go to Bustamante, but a substantial fraction would go to Arnold.

Certainly not me or ANY of the Republicans I personally know. Hell, I talked to several DEMOCRATS today who were so impressed with McClintock's performance (very "statesmanlike" was one quote) that they were going to vote for him over Bustanutty.
If McClintock drops out, I'll be voting against the recall. I signed that petition in the hope that we'd get a governor willing to support conservative principles, willing to combat the illegal immigrants flooding our state, and willing to scale back the government programs that are sucking away our tax dollars. Arnold does NONE of those, and he will not get my vote.
