Zinni came out against the war before it began.

Ninny Zinni is at it again! I am
so glad this guy is no longer W's
Middle East envoy. Sorry he was.
To: Destro
He's an Arabist.
"...we need to quit making enemies we don't need to make enemies out of. And we need to fix those relationships. There's a deep chasm growing between that part of the world and our part of the world. And it's strange, about a month after 9/11, they were sympathetic and compassionate toward us. How did it happen over the last year? And we need to look at that -- that is a higher priority." Zinni, 2002.
Feel the love!
To: Leroy S. Mort
"Worst of all, Zinni said, a war against Iraq would antagonize America's friends in the Middle East.
``We need to quit making enemies that we don't need to make enemies out of,'' he said.
"
We have friends in the middle east other than Israel?

Question: Why did Powell bring this guy into the State Department to act as a Middle East envoy? He is another CINC that acted as a proconsul and had delusions of grandeur. These guys need to be taken down a peg.

about a month after 9/11, they were sympathetic and compassionate toward us. Is Zinni talking about that period in time, post 9/11, when the Palis were passing out candy and shooting off their guns in celebration after they heard about had happened to the WTC towers?

Is Zinni talking about that period in time, post 9/11, when the Palis were passing out candy and shooting off their guns in celebration after they heard about had happened to the WTC towers?Probably. I can think of a lot of adjectives for "that part of the world," but "sympathetic" and "compassionate" aren't on the list.

I think it is no mystery. Zinni was probably expecting a big cushy important job somewhere and didn't get what he wanted. Now he could go on with his life and do something productive, where he would get no attention and maybe do some good for the world, or he could be a complete crybaby prick and badmouth the President, ensuring he would get the attention he so dearly craves. Remember, these people are lifelong bureaucrats, used to fawning attention from their subordinates. Once this is taken away, they find a new place to get their attention fix. It's so simple.
To: kabar
This is particularly good advice from Zinni. I hope he's not too specific.
"Coordinate everything with everybody. Establish coordination mechanisms that include political, military, nongovernmental organizations, and the interested parties."
