The short-faced bear The short-forced bear is truly an extinct species. All bears in existence today have been sporting long-faces ever since Ditka left.

No telling if the bear and the pig were in the cave at the same time. Were there ever cave-dwelling humans in the New World?

Mankind loves a mystery:
"The easy part is identifying what it is," Forir said. "The hard part is determining what it's doing here. Most of these animals don't belong in a cave, and yet they're here."

Spelunkers are what they call rocks that fall into deep water. Serious cave explorers take umbrage and use the term caver instead.
Spelunker was a word made up by a Times reporter because he wanted an official sounding name for sport cavers. Today Cavers reserve the name for people who go once or twice a year and drag a case of beer into the cave with them. They are usually rescued by "Cavers" who volunteer to be on the national cave rescue team.

have been slowly working to map and study the cave centimetre-by-centimetreCool story.
The study would go 2.54 times faster if they went inch-by-inch.

We got married at Bridal Cave.
Then afterward, we went fishing.

The study would go 2.54 times faster if they went inch-by-inch. My thoughts exactly. I started to go back to the header to see if I had missed something. Apparently it makes the piece more scholarly? What is it with these eggheads anyway? I did notice he's fairly young; versed in the ways of the new world...

Well, the article is from an African News paper, therefore the metric system was used.
The thing that clued me into it being African before clicking the link was the reference to R350000. I think that is 350,000 Rand (South Africa).

Interesting date of discovery. I guess most of our attention was on something else that day.

After making my untimely post, I THEN went to the article to see what the skinny was...duh! Odd that none of our domestic press picked up the story.......or maybe some have by now.

Yes it is made up. The Times reporter in question coined it after "Speleologist" which was a person who studied caves scientifically. No term existed for "Sport Cavers" so he made up the word Spelunker.
The term stuck to the chagrin of those who were labeled as such.
