I note from his picture that he doesn't look terribly Han, as Chinese go, so he could probably pass for Central Asian fairly easily. I don't know exactly what his background is, but I'd imagine he looked enough the part to get by in his Advanced Islamic studies in Syria without attracting too much attention.

As to it being treason, that is pretty clearly the case, but I don't think they'll go that route. They can put him away for eternity for the disclosures of classified information. Under the UCMJ, he could likely face death even without the specific charge of treason. I doubt the goverment will want to get into the specifics of what he did, however. For simplicity's sake, he's more likely to spend the next 50 years making big rocks into little rocks at Leavenworth. Not as satisfying for the cause of justice, but easier to justify from a P.R. standpoint.

Politics aside, I'm more curious to see which 'foriegn power' he sold out to. It would have to be a group that has a very strong interest in knowing what is going on in that prison, i.e. someone with something to hide. Obviously, Al Qaeda (the main body or one of the tentacles) springs to mind. They need to know what is leaking, and anticipate our response. Who else would run the risk?

He did live in Syria. Could it be the Syrians? They're not our friends, by any means, and it would be interesting for them to know, but were they truly connected to Al Qaeda pre-9/11? Only in passing, I think. They've actually given us considerable information about AQ that has panned out since then. I don't see them with anything to worry about regarding Gitmo.

How about his Advanced Islamic studies there? Here's where it gets interesting. Regardless of where the madrassa was in Syria, it saw most of its funding coming in from next door: Saudi Arabia. Remember, the Syrian government is Baathist, it's agencies wouldn't appeal to an adult Islamic convert who flew across the globe to study the religion in the heartland. The madrassa, on the other hand, would have an element of Wahabbi fervor that he might have found considerably more intoxicating.

Whether or not he went for the hard AQ line, or more likely, the standard Wahabbi line (the difference being in methods), who is to say. If that's where he took the bait initially, it would explain his actions now. Large segments of the Saudi government, and its powerful clergy, are likely desperate to know how much we have found out from these men. They would also be closely tied to him, through religious channels. Rather than money or ego, I suspect that he collected the information on behalf of Saudi Arabai in general, and their Islamic clergy in specific. Time will tell.

Good point...may well represent the path his info took/takes.

Whomever, it is clear that he was turned and used his position to aid the enemy. I personally believe he was recruited either prior to going to Syria or while there and came back with the specific intention to get into the military for use later.

I don't know this for a fact...it's just my own conjecture based on the story here.

Don't make the mistake of assuming the guy must be religious. If he was converted before being politically turned, he may have been religiously motivated. But if he was politically turned before he "got religion," perhaps he is just using religion as his cover.

Your theory makes sense. SA, as you point out, is desperate to know how much we know of their involvement. A saudi link would also explain the seeming illogic of leaving Lee in such a sensitive position if, as the CIA claims, they knew about him for a long time. (Note no one's claiming the FBI or defense dept had Lee on their radar...)
