"The 9th Circus Court of Appeals" (George Will TOUTS McCLINTOCK!)

LOS ANGELES -- All that was lacking to complete the awfulness of California's recall was supplied when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals shoved its oar in.

He has her determination to revive what she called ``the vigorous virtues''-- entrepreneurship, deferral of gratification, individual initiative, personal responsibility in making appetites conform to resources. Together, these aptitudes can be called adulthood.

So how did they inflate McClintock's numbers by oversampling minorities and democrats? Hmmm?

Your arguement indicates McClintock is doing BETTER than 18% in the poll.

I understand the frustration of Schwarzenegger's supporters on this forum but I don't understand their dogged attempts to convert the "unfaithful".

Most of these empassioned folks are making two erroneous assumptions.

1) The majority of McClintock supporters are Republicans and want the party to succeed in California. Most of McClintocks supporters are registered Republicans but feel no particular loyalty to the party. They are more properly called California Conservatives or RROs (registered Republicans only - sort of a RINO w/ a conservative viewpoint).

2) Many active Republicans loyalists in the California are anxious to see Bush control the state party and feel he's good for California. While most Republicans in California support Bush's foreign policy decisions they are dissappointed or upset with his domestic policies and their impact on California. These loyal Republicans are voting for Schwarzenegger but are holding their collective noses.

To those supporting Schwarzenegger I have tolerance, but also am amused by their dogged determination in the face of reality.

unworkable promises

You mean like not raising taxes? That's what Arnold will do--raise taxes. He won't have the balls to make any budget cuts--he doesn't have the balls now to detail any of them, so why should we expect him to change. He's an opportunist who had been waiting for years to run and finally saw his chance.

He already has a 44% disapproval rating without ever having held office, and when he turns out to be a failure because he won't implement conservative reforms, he'll have Davis-like numbers.

This liberal Republican will guarantee that no Republican of any stripe wins the governorship there for at least 20 years. And Bush will definitely lose Calif. in 2004, thanks to and not despite Schwarzenegger.

Worst of all, the party will be perhaps permanently dragged to the Left.

Your item 2] is utterly correct.

Republicans in CA have very mixed feelings about the national GOP domestic policies. A simple, and old, matter illustrates this perfectly. Ward Connerly became a GOP hero here in CA because of prop 209. GWB, his brother Jeb, and the national GOP, have run away from us on this matter. GWB praised the recent SCOTUS decision in the Michigan case, though his people had filed a tepid brief in dissent. Ward thinks this decision was a disaster. So do I. But GWB praised it.

Now, this plays out in CA on prop 54. Arnold is against it, and speaks sneeringly of Ward and his friends. Bush, perhaps led by Rove, tends this way. But, here in CA, we conservatives are with Ward. And, sadly, we expect to lose, in part because the GOP nationally won't join us. Naturally, we feel bad.

One could make a similar case about Prop 187 and illegal immigration, or about Prop 22 and the defence of marriage, or about Prop 227, Ron Unz's "Engilish for the Children," and Rove's desire to win hispanic votes.

No, conservatives and some Republicans here aren't wild about winning for the sake of GWB.

He's undermined us more than once too often.

Curious to know what you think ...

Cheers,

Richard F.

I wonder:

If everyone who wants McClintock would actually vote for him what would happen?

He probably would WIN!!!

Get a grip. He's lost twice in State wide elections. Viva Thousand Oaks, though.

Hope this answers your querry ...

If McClintock outpolls Schwarzenegger among California Republicans in the recall election, McClintock should enter the 2004 Republican presidential primary in California.

This act of definance will send a message to the Lincoln Club that will be hard for the Bush family to ignore.

He comes off as an annoying little fag man boy.

And a "conservative" man (like many Arnoldites) who is devoted to a male body-builder and movie star known more for his muscles than his acting ability comes off as...?

It would appear the name of George Will can be added to the short list of well known public figures, who have chosen to break with the current madness in the California GOP and back Tom McClintock. The others, Lyn Nofziger, Micheal Reagan and Michael Savage. Am I missing anyone? ;^)

Translation for star-struck Arnold followers: California needs the tough medicine that McClintock is offering.

Well put.

Reasonable people can disagree.

Don't you just hate it when that happens? (Go, McClintock!!!)

I am NOT amused by Schwarzenegger supporters. I think they're a bunch of sell-outs.

I was making no such assumptions, simply pointing out that Field showed the LA Times Poll for what it is - a fraud.

You can read their report here...

http://www.field.com/fieldpollonline/subscribers/WhyPollsDiffer-Rebuttal.pdf

Interestingly enough, the Times doesn't include questions 3 and 4 in its breakdown of the poll, as you can see here...

http://images.latimes.com/media/acrobat/2003-09/9363816.pdf

They were gaming the poll to reach a desired result. Look at all of the other polls available and they are fairly consistent. The Times Poll was so wildly out of line that Field felt the need to respond.

I'm not the one who is unhappy with my style - I like it just fine, thank you!

As for leaving you alone - it's simple - don't call Tom names - he doesn't deserve that. If all your family plans to vote for Arnold - that's just fine with me. But .. don't diss the person I plan to vote for.
