Rock star Bruce Springsteen called for the impeachment of President George W. Bush at a nearly sold-out concert at FedEx Field just outside of Washington, DC tonight. During the introductions of his back-up band, The E Street Band, Springsteen said of saxophonist Clarence Clemons, "It's time to impeach the president and get a man in there to get us out of this mess." The audience cheered in response.
At a recent concert at Fenway Park in Boston, Springsteen touted liberal comedian Al Franken's new book and encouraged people to read it. In the Spring, Springsteen issued a statement defending the Dixie Chicks after they told a foreign audience that they were "ashamed that the President of the United States was from Texas."
At least Springsteen chose to make his statement about impeaching President Bush in the nation's capital. However, his timing just two days after the nation marked the second anniversary of the September 11 attacks is sure to make his remarks even more controversial than otherwise, especially because the nation's capital was a target.
Springsteen was silent during the eight years of Bill Clinton's presidency: A time when children were gassed and burned to death at Waco; our national security was betrayed to the communist Chinese government in exchange for millions of dollars for Clinton's campaign coffers; and when Clinton lied under oath and obstructed justice in a civil rights lawsuit filed by one of the "little people" that Springsteen champions.
Springsteen's current album and tour are based on the September 11 attacks and he has several songs about the bravery of those who gave their lives responding to those attacks. Springsteen's tour is scheduled to end at the beginning of October with three dates at New York City's Shea Stadium.

In the 70's, one of my musically-inclined friends convinced me that Springsteen's album "Born to Run" was the greatest thing since sliced bread. So, I went out and bought it. I listened to it 3 or 4 times, trying to convince myself that it really was a great album. Couldn't. It went to the back of the rack, never to be played again. "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out." Yeah, like, wow, man, really cool. Not. Certain people are going to be pushed by the media, since they are considered "hip" and "cool".

While he has every right to voice his opinion, no matter how foolish, Springsteen should stick to writing and singing songs.
I kind of like his music, but I won't be putting any more money into his pockets for CDs or concert tickets; because he'll be donating $$ to causes that I oppose.
If you are talking about Bruce's "Born in the U.S.A." as "national patriotism, you've obviously never actually paid attention to the words...anything but patriotic.

The lyrics to that song were a mixture of populist love of country, and a placing of massive blame for the economic decline in the '70s and early '80s on capitalism, the Viet Nam conflict, and class warfare. We all knew that Ronald Reagan had misunderstood Bruce's meaning when he praised the song. We forgave Reagan because he meant for us to heal after the war had torn this country apart.
The thing is, the people who did most the tearing were on the left, and Bruce was and is a part of that self destructive tendency in our country. He proved it with this comment.Got in a little hometown jam So they put a rifle in my hand Sent me off to a foreign land To go and kill the yellow man
We had every right o wage war against the Taliban and Saddam Hussein was given every opportunity to avoid the war that was waged against him. President Bush was given complete authorization prior to invading Iraq by a large majority in the U.S. Congress. The fact that WMD's havn't been found in Iraq as of yet is just an unfinished detail of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Everyone knows that Saddam had these weapons and provided nothing to convince us otherwise.
Those who ignore these facts are jjst kidding themselves and must be blinded by their own hatred for GWB and the thurst for power.
Bruce Springsteen has aligned himself with the Dixie Chicks, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Jeanine Gerafalo and Michael Moore. POOR Bruce :-)

I think he was always right on that edge... and now it appears that he took the big step. Too bad... maybe someday he'll get it.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the paleocons are also playing a different role on the same team by opposing neocon efforts to undo 50 years of appeasement. The McLaughlin Group makes me sick every time I happen to catch it on TV.
