It's not a "they" it's a "he"
The guy is amazing! He is a one man show, really makes use of the footpedals to get the whole band effect...but he does it well, not cheesey at all. If you pick up his CD "The Madrigals"...it has a bonus DVD with it and you can see him live, gives you an appreciation for how he does it. It's an EP with the DVD so it's only like $10 at most record stores. A few of my musician friends here recommended it to me and I've not been disappointed.
I don't know what genre I'd put it in. Eliminating the obviously "nots"...it's not country, not really jazz/blues, not pop...I don't know...I'd maybe compare him to a Craig Chaquico with lyrics (he's got a great voice), or a Juicy Lucy, Rikk Emmett, something along those lines.
Give him a listen...he's really good.
