California GOP Insiders: McClintock Will Drop Out

California GOP Insiders: McClintock Will Drop Out Eric Leonard, NewsMax.com Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 LOS ANGELES – Leading elected Republicans have made it clear for the first time the party will stand behind only one candidate in the recall election to ensure a victory over Democrat Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante. Neither state Sen. Tom McClintock's nor Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaigns say they are considering dropping out of the race, but results from the most recent Field Poll, coupled with GOP pressure, point towards McClintock being asked to "take one for the team," insiders say.

"I believe we're going to have one candidate," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., during an appearance today on CNN.

He said the party's decision would likely be made during the state's Republican Party convention this weekend in Southern California.

"I'm going to the convention to bring the party together. I'm confident we're going to get to one candidate," Issa said.

Hours earlier, California Republican Party chairman Duf Sundheim made similar comments during an interview on Fox News Channel.

While McClintock has been more closely aligned with the Republican Party's traditional philosophies, Schwarzenegger continues to lead with voters, according to the most recent Field Poll.

The poll revealed little change in voter support now that Peter Ueberroth, a Republican who said he was running as an independent, quit the race.

With Ueberroth out, Schwarzenegger went from 25 to 27 percent, McClintock from 13 to 14 percent, and Bustamante from 30 to 32 percent.

However, with McClintock out, Schwarzenegger vaults into the lead over Bustamante.

If McClintock drops out, he should be given a role in Schwarzenegger's campaign. I would love to see a tag team McClintock-Schwarzenegger going after the other team Davis-Bustamante

Great idea. Then Mac can garner help from Arnie in running against Boxer. I'd bet W would make an appearance. I don't even live in CA (I live in NC) but the country is watching this race - big time. Too bad Arnold is too liberal.

Talked with a minor candidate today (fondly termed egomaniacs by many in the press and others).

Apparently they frequently communicate with each other and the major candidates to form a group consensus.

What struk me is the valued opinion of political insiders: Bustamante can't win because of the cultural bigotry in California and Bustamante's loss of support from the DNC when he pulled the plug on Davis yesterday.

"No. It didn't happen last year, the GOP didn't give McClintock a single penny, why would they now?"

Duh, because the whole GOP establishment is begging for him to step aside... if they are serious about it, let them help him do some 'career planning' by supporting a future candidacy. McClintock has the leverage to strike a deal.

I just think that after the Nazi-dad, pot-smoking, gang-banging, racist stories are already out there, they could reveal that “drunken Arnold drove his illegal maid to the strip bar” and nobody will care.

Dang, how did you guess! :-)

Silly me. I forgot I was talking to a McCult memebr. Go back to your cave sorry for waking you. Make sure to have your Nike's on for when the sapceship comes by to pick you up.

First of all we prefer "Tombot".

A "McCult" member is a person that follows a leader no matter what...the people who follow outside of their own principles...kind of like an Arnold Supporter...oops!!!...did it again...just can't find that backspace button...

BTW: Do you have a problem with dyslexia?

Just wondering...

I have heard the good stewardship argument used to justify all kinds of bad stuff, including churches using it as a reason for not using their resources to help someone who is in dire need.

But I must admit, this is the most farfetched and creative (and wrong) use of it I have seen--using it as a reason for support of a pro-abortion, pro-gay-agenda, conservative-despising politician. Unbelievable.

Well if all these people around here are right, Bill Jones should just quit now to allow McClintock in...

I'll bet on tomorrow, when it gets here...

That's exactly what's stopping them from using it.

Yes, I'm aware of that. So I'm sure I used the term in the proper context.

I think Californication is so screwed up nobody can save them. I would start by laying off the entire state government for 4 weeks.

I'll second that proposal. I'd do the same for the Feds... permanantly except for Rummy's military. DOE was supposed to be a "temporary" entity in Carter's era (he implemented the idea) when the idiot drempt up the idea that the feds could orchestrate supplies of gasoline and diesel better than the supply/demand of free enterprise and market demand. Carter was; and still is a dolt. Back to DOE, Look where it is now. A black hole for taxpayers' money.

McClintock could turn himself into a GOP hero overnight, then run against Boxer with Bush, Cheney, Powell, Guiliani and Arnold standing next to him at campaign events.

a beautiful vision indeed thanks for thinking of it

Hey moron, LAST YEAR would have been his controller race. No one was asking him to stand aside.

The CAGOP doesn't support conservatives, ever since Wilson took it over.

"If he doesn't drop-out, his political career is DEAD. If he does, he writes his own ticket." Great. Another 19th century party boss gracing us with his wisdom... Get a clue, you don't say who will run, you don't decide who will win. Tom McClintock became the #1 Republican vote getter in 2002 WITHOUT A SINGLE PENNY from the CA GOP. So, no, his political career won't be over. "McClintock's supporters may be a LOT of things but Tom is no fool." Wait, don't you want McClintock to drop out so WE will vote for you candidate? And how exactly will your arrogance and insults convince us to vote for Arnold? Answer me that.

Forget yer meds? Pretty nasty response to a simple opinion/observation. Sheesh.

In your reference to Robert Adelgary: "For just signing up today, you have certainly been more contentious on every thread, than helpful. Can't you just discuss the issues without the flames?"

I agree. This guy has a real nasty attitude. If he were an Evian H2O salesman, he couldn't sell a bottle of water to a millionaire, after three days, crossing Death Valley desert on foot with no compass.

But Bustamante will remain lt. governor no matter what happens.

If the recall fails, or if it succeeds but he isn't chosen as the successor governor, yes.

Obviously if it succeeds and he wins, he's the governor, not the LG. (He'd pick his successor LG.)

There is one wacky scenario, suggested by those who note that Davis hates Bustamante (it's mutual) and might choose to drag Busty down with him if, shortly before Oct. 7, Davis appears doomed: Davis would resign, which would make Bustamante the governor by operation of law, but would not halt the recall election. If the recall then fails, OR if it succeeds and Bustamante wins as successor, then Busty would remain governor, BUT IF the recall succeeds AND Busty (who by this point is governor, not LG) doesn't win as successor, he'd be out of both offices. Or so goes one theory. Busty would probably fight in the courts to go back to his LG cave.

Look, with all the ammo Davis/Bustamante have laid out to be used against them, from Bustamante's use of the "n" word to drivers licenses for illegals to the car tax to the dioxin levels in San Francisco Bay, Arnold should be able to win regardless of whether or not McClintock is in the race. If he isn't smart enough to use the ammo available to him, I don't see him being much use as governor. Don't misunderstand me, I'm still prepared to vote for him if the numbers work out that way come election day, but so far his campaign has been on par with Bill Simon's in terms of making good choices.

You said,

"I am speaking of the McClintock supporters who have said they won't vote for Arnold even if it means a win for Bust-a-move. Again...I am only speaking from a sense of reality here...Nothing more."/I>

And this is in response to... what? If someone were to read over 30-250 responses, are the rest of us to understand, or have a clue in what you are responding to? Whay not italicize the response to which you are responding to? In other words, what'd did the other guy say?
