Where I live, there is a large undeveloped property right behind our apartment. When he got out on both occasions, he wandered the property back there, only making his presence known when he got "really hungry". If we lived anywhere else, I wouldn't have him back. (Around others, he is a scardy cat.)

Some cats who haven't exercised for some time should start slowly.
This cat is working up to it.

My kitty had quite the scam going for a couple days. My brother, kb2614, was living with me at the time and he got home from work before I did. The Queen of the Universe started chowing down every last piece of food before he got home and then when he came in, would "lead" him to her empty bowl and meow pathetically. After a couple days he said, "why do you keep forgetting to feed The Queen in the morning?" and I said, "What are you talking about? I fill the dish every morning..." Busted! We had to give her credit though - it was well thought out.

My cat eats green beans and also likes soggy french fries. Nice to know that your cats do the same thing and that mine's not just a freak!

My nine-year-old calico...has the "starving act" down to a fine art...She even has this breathy, weak meow she does that sounds as if she's drawing her last breath.
My cat is the EXACT same way! He does that little weak breathy 'mew' whenever he wants food, as though he's dying and on his last limb!
Nevermind that he just ate his wet food and was also given some treats and has a full dry food bowl! Often when I go to the kitchen my kitty follows me and begs for food, even if he just ate, and even if he has tons of food. He acts like he's starving and yet he has just eaten and was also given treats! He also won't eat his wet food --- or even his tuna -- again after he's left it and come back to it, even if it's just 10 minutes later. His food has to be re-stirred and transferred to a brand new plate for him or else he turns his nose up to it. (He's finicky at the same time he's doing the 'starving act'!) I also think my cat relates love with food -- it comforts and satisfies him just to know that he can get what he wants, when he wants it, even if he's not hungry. Oh he plays me like a fiddle...
Here's the little guy...

if we leave a bag of hamburger rolls on the counter overnight, she will drag them off to some corner of the house, tear through the bag and eat one.
Too funny!
