WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush will announce on Sunday night that he plans to ask Congress for $87 billion to fund the U.S. military deployment in Iraq and pay for reconstruction, a Republican source said.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the money would fund U.S. military operations in Iraq and reconstruction over the coming budget year.
The figure includes assistance for Afghanistan. Bush was to make the request in an 8:30 p.m. EDT address to the nation, the source said.
The figure was at the high end of expectations. Some members of Congress said earlier they expected Bush to get what he asked for but wanted him to detail how long U.S. troops would remain in Iraq and outline a strategy for bringing them home. (snip)

You can say whatever you want against our Commander in Chief. You can say the mission in Iraq is useless, pointless.......a waste of money. I'm not trying to stop you, and you know it.
But it looks to me like it is YOU who are trying to stifle my freedom to say what I think. And what I told billbears is exactly what I think of HIM (I don't recall adding your name to the post....and I haven't read your posts, so I didn't have a clue as to what you thought about the mission in Iraq).
I gave my opinion, which is shared my many military families. If you don't support the mission my son is on, you cannot fully support him. HE understands the need for him to be there. HE understands its goal.
It's a widespread opinion, which was expressed by many military families about the peaceniks, and if you don't like it, that's your problem.
The Battle of Iraq has been won. The War on Terror continues......and it's focal point is Iraq. At the USO show in Baghad, there was a survivor of 9/11 who THANKED the troops for fighting this WAR that the terrorists began.
That is exactly what is happening now, and it is worth every penny we spend to keep that war off the streets of America.
That's MY opinion, and in spite of your desire for me to shut up, I am free to express it.
And don't you DARE tell me I have been disrespectful of my son! He is not ashamed of me, and if he were here, he would be angry with you for dismissing his mission as a waste of money. He is proudly serving this country for the cause of freedom in a war against an enemy that seeks to destroy everything we stand for, whether you understand that or not.
(The military understands the difference between xlinton's abuse of them, and Bush's respect for them, and you ought to as well. The comparison of Somalia and Haiti, and the military hater xlinton was a low blow. There is no comparison there).
Well, it's pretty obvious that you weren't listening, now isn't it?
You've been reading the NYTimes and believing it, I guess.
This whole business of our foreign policy, supporting the country or the president, the domestic policy, all those issues that hotly divides people on this forum remind me of some verses in 2 Timothy. Interesting thing about the Bible is that though its contents are of a spiritual nature they are pertinent to the entirety of life.
The verses I refer to talk of godless men who take on a form of godliness and lead captive silly women. Modern sensibilities treat this verse as a grievous example of sexism thus shutting their ears to a great truth. Generally speaking men are associated with logic and women emotion. "Silly women" is a metaphor for being ruled by emotion and the result of not critically analyzing is being led astray, captured by pernicious doctrines. Since we all have testosterone and estrogen in our make up all are susceptible.
Take this to the world of modern politics and places like this forum we see good people ruled by emotion - love of country, fear of enemies at the gate whether it be foreign terror or Democrats at home, faith in someone who says what we want to hear. Logically love of country does not mean blind allegiance to the government. The founders themselves warned against government. Fear is a powerful emotion which underscores the old adage that people will gladly trade liberty for security. Fear of external threat rallies us to our government and makes us accept what normally would be totally unacceptable. Fear of Democrats keeps conservatives from forming a viable alternative to the globalist socialism of the establishment Republicans. Like the emotional mother whose child is arrested who refuses to believe that her son is guilty because "her boy wouldn't do such a thing" conservatives can not accept the truth of where their leadership is taking them.
We won't count the loss of life since the world has plenty of people to spare and as long as it's not me who cares? Let's just count the economic costs. When money comes out of your pocket you don't have the extra finances to take your family on vacation or maybe Junior's college will have to be put off for a few years or those house repairs just won't get done and that worn carpet will have to do for the foreseeable future. Maybe the bank turns down Junior #2's home loan because there isn't enough money to finance both Jr's house and the war and reconstruction. Are you better off? Are the people whose livelihoods depended on your economic activity better off? What about their suppliers?
Wars divert economic activity from productive development which is universally beneficial to society to production that is draining to the larger and beneficial to a smaller segment of society. Never forget that war is the health of the state.
I don't think any of my statements mentioned that (I was talking about the reconstruction). I was referring to the current situation and it's potential impact. Long term affects from previous such wars, ww2 as an example, can offset the cost of rebuilding.
In it you have made several serious errors in your assessment of me, and my views toward the President, which is commonplace among those of you who dislike him so vehemently. I'm not even close to the belief that he is perfect, but I am far away from those of you who distrust his every move, some of whom have admitted hatred of him.
I am VERY sorry that I made the statement that one cannot support my son and not the mission he is on. It was made out of emotion, and it was wrong. I have been deeply troubled by those words that should never have been said.
But I make no apologies for being defensive of him, because I AM his 'mommy.' I know that you intended that as an insult, dogbyte, and to hurt me by it, but it is a badge I wear proudly. I have NEVER used my son's service as a political weapon, nor will I ever do so, but I share gladly the pride I have in him, AND my support of the mission he so proudly is fulfilling, and the Commander in Chief he respects and honors.
And I share the pride HE feels, that he has been, in his own words,'one of the few people in history who has had the opportunity to help free a people from a brutal dictator.' I know that his mission is just, and the goal honorable.
It was stupid of me to come on a thread filled with Bush haters and say anything about my son and his mission in Iraq. It was stupid of me to express my emotions among critics of a President I greatly admire, in SPITE of his flaws and the policy differences I have with him.
I hope that you forgive me for my (false) accusation of billbears, but I also hope that you think seriously about the false accusations that many of you regularly and relentlessly level at those of us who support our President, and the name-calling and insults that you use so flippantly against us.
May God continue to bless and protect America, and may our freedom to be individual, to express different opinions remain strong.

8 Proud to Have Liberated Iraq ["I have never been prouder to be an American"]
Don't worry, when you help elect a Democrat, our borders won't matter at all - nor will the national debt. There will be no NATION of America. Right now the Clintons and the DNC are siding with EU global socialism over the American Constitution, with help from their inter(national) PR agents-press. They are not interested in a strong America - just the opposite.
In Europe, some are pushing for Clinton as head of NATO, others want to change the UN rules re. Security Council member nations not ruling.
THIS administration has been fighting for 2 years to bring NON-socialist nations into our Coalition. Former Communist states and those with a history of being abused by tyrants understand. France, the DNC, and Kofi - are going for power. High-speed communications and advanced technology make it possible for those who are ambitious without a conscience to cause immense trouble in this world.
The Farm Bill cost $80 billion. Dems. grease more than 80 billion in palms annually. I doubt many on this thread even know what's going on in Iraq, or how the money is earmarked. Much of it will go back into the US economy.
One thing's certain - the left-press plays this party like a violin, knowing exactly which hot buttons to push and how to divide. It's what they do best - divide and destroy and deceive.
As CS Lewis might have said, "the dwarfs are for the dwarfs."
And some seem to fall right into their trap
Great post Ragtime Cowgirl
That old Clive Staples Lewis was a veritable FONT of wisdom, eh??
Happy birthday, m-a's Mike!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, courageous defender of peace, and protector of America, MIKE!
And a cyberhug to his beloved wife, who is honorably serving this country, and this strong Commander in Chief by supporting and waiting for her brave husband here at home!
We are in this WAR together......shoulder to shoulder, against the enemy....... foreign, and domestic.......and some, right here on FR! :o)
You know what's an even more outrageous figure?
Eighty-seven billion dollars is OVER $30 million dollars for each individual murdered on September 11!
What a pant load!
Isn't doggy?
I mean...who the hell is going to pay all that money for dead people!
And why should we?
We're alive!
We have bills.
They don't anymore!
Why should you have to shoulder any financial responsibility for that?
Let their kids pay for revenge!
At least those old enough to get a job and chase down the bad men who killed mommy and daddy when they went to work.
Better yet...let everyone keep those extra $300 hundred dollars so that they can buy an extra #6 combo (superzised) at Mickey Dee's every week (they're about $6.00/ea here in SoFla) and screw trying to beat the people trying beat us...WE NEED OUR EXTRA MICKEY DEE'S COMBINATION A WEEK MORE THAN WE NEED TO CONDUCT A WAR ON PEOPLE THAT KILL NEW YORKERS AT WORK!
Right dogbyte?
