NEVER MIND the compressed CO2 cylinders used on most soda fountains ...

I've seen those cylinders, but never that clamp. This looks to be relatively specialized equipment.

However -- I am a fair man -- I do think it might be possible to quietly acquire one of these from a junkyard. So an untracable acquisition could occur.

I am undecided. You seem to be decided. I certainly am not at all influenced by your rush to judgement. I'll let the authorities work.

This one is hard to figure.

If the pizza guy conceived the plan, why actually use real material and set the bomb? Was he concerned police might see through it if he didn't make it real?

If it was a case of innocent pizza guy, and masterbrain bank robber, then it will happen again. (unless the real robber is out of dough)

Question: Did the money blow up with the pizza guy? (I know, I am going back to read all pertinent data, so I won't be so ignorant next time I reply).

I doubt that the money blew up. The man was apprehended and in handcuffs when he died. Even if the money was on him (unlikely), his body was not destroyed in the blast.

He sounds like he was apprehended quickly and I doubt that he stashed the money in a "drop spot" first.

Good point. That would make it hard to just clip the wires since one of them will likely set it off automatically. I wonder if the Pizza guy would go to so much trouble to make it hard to defuse.

Here's a story about another one in Colombia in July of this year that the police there were able to defuse.

Based on your good picture, I see the following was used to modify an existing clamp........

A bending brake to produce the 90 degree bends on the holding bracket. A MIG welder loaded with bronze wire to perform the welds which are of poor quality and not ground to finish quality. A mill was used to modify the clevis pin and to install that little pin. A metal shear had to also be used along with a portaband or permanant metal band saw. FWIW.....

IMO, which doesn't mean much, either the pizza guy was telling the truth and the real robber decided to get rid of any evidence (seeing the police with his dupe and his money), or the pizza guy and his coworker dreamed up the plan, using materials available in their business, and the coworker od'd when he saw his buddy explode (triggered by someone's cell phone/similar device inadvertently).
