When Senator Edmund Ross, R-KA, voted against the conviction of the impeachment of President Johnson in 1868, he said that he was looking into his political grave by doing so. Ross lost his Senate seat when the legislature replaced him thereafter. He was the key vote to sparing Johnson from removal from office.
But does Greer see how starving and dehydrating Terri could lead to his "political grave"? Perhaps, it would not even hurt Greer. But it would make him known, and anti-euthanasia people around the country might contribute to his opponent in an effort to unseat him in 2004.
Of course, Greer may decided to retire from the bench and not run next year, when he will be 60. Perhaps he has tired of being a judge. There are so many variables to consider.
I just hope that he values his political career, wants to run again, and fears that starving this poor soul might cause his political demise.
