Just out of curiosity, have you guys lost all that weight with or without adding exercise into the mix?

I have a question for the Adkins folks. I'm 42, 5'10 and 2 years ago weighed 195. I returned to cycling and now weigh 150. Obviously, I put in a lot of miles on the bike each week, but I do so being fueled with a diet that's 60% carb, 25% protein and 15% fat. That's pretty generic for endurance sports. Here's the point...on the Adkins diet, can you sustain a vigorous exercise regime? Does the lack of carbs restrict your glygogen production/stores?

When I went on the diet, I joined a gym; I've been exercizing regularly since then. (I used to exercize regularly, but I've been sitting around getting lazy and fat for several years.) However my appetite has definitely been cut. The day before yesterday, I did the treadmill for 2 hours. Yesterday, I had so little appetite that I didn't eat anything all day. I didn't particularly want it; so I figured, why eat it? I also feel very good, slightly euphoric, and I feel that I think more clearly.

Well, I've lost 50 pounds in about 15 weeks, just with the Atkins diet. No, and I mean NO, exercise. I've got osteoporosis, and walking caused problems for me in the past, breaking bones in my feet. Due to other physical problems, I can't swim or ride a bike either. However, now that I've lost some weight (to say that I was morbidly obese was an understatement... 6'4", 325#.) I'm now at 275, and I am going to start to try doing some walking, and see how it goes. I'm hoping that the weight loss will help, and that the walking might also improve the osteoporosis as well. When I was in college, I played lacrosse and lots of intramural sports, and I weighed in at 215-220. Since I'm no longer that active, my goal is to get down to 200#, which would have me with a 34 or 35 inch waist.

Why couldn't you all do it without Atkins?

I tried a modified Atkin's Diet a few years ago. NO carbs, just meat, cheese, eggs, nuts and vitamins. I purposefully did not exercise. I lost 20 lbs fast (in about 2 weeks.) I've stayed on a highprotein/ low carbohydrate diet for nearly three years and gone back to exercise. No weight gain - great physical health, i.e., low cholesteral lab results, 125/63 bp., 58 bpm hr.

If this Atkin's diet, or any of the dozen similar diets, is adhered to by a normally healthy person, weight loss and maintenance should be easily attained.

I lost 37 pounds and I sit in front of a computer all day.

I do move around more because I feel better but not in an attempt to lose weight.

I'm a little under 6'-3" and now weigh 214 pounds. I've gone slow. I started at the beginning of the year lowering my carbs by dumping the breads and sugars.

I don't go hungry. Eating more fats slows your digestion so you don't feel hungry anytime soon after eating. The need for snacks is greatly reduced.

My blood pressure went from boarder line high to normal in the process.
