In the cases I've been involved in, judges are quite understanding if given adequate proof of the situation. Contempt is saved for those unwilling or unable to present proof of financial hardship. They usually have a lousy history of payment prior to their new found "hardship". This has happened to thousands of men in this country because they have hard heads.

I watched my brother get ripped to shreds by the Florida family courts. The judges, the DSS workers, the Guardian Ad Litem, all ignored facts and un-refutable evidence. It was the most hideous thing I ever witnessed.
