Cool. I saw Mars w/ the naked eye on Wed. night. It's right next to the moon (see pic at DrudgeReport.com)

I'm glad they're taking the time to tell us it's "quite safe."

Oh..they won't attack us...but if they did...

Ahhh...Science.

Muttly attach an even heavier-duty chin strap to his official raccoonskin cap...just in case.

Better make sure it has plenty of tinfoil for the inside!

The 27th is the same day talks begin in China over North Koreas war dance. Mars is the war planet with its two moons, "fear" and "panic."

"It won't be this close again until about 2287."

I'll be busy that nite, catch it next time.

And despite age-old tall tales of little green men from Mars, there is nothing to worry about, says Linda Sparke, who chairs the University of Wisconsin-Madison astronomy department.

The only reason the socialists in Madtown would be interested in life on Mars is so they can raise their property taxes!

I've been watching Mars every night for the past week or so. You can tell it's getting closer every night.

Even a man who is pure of heart and says his prayers by nite,
Can a Wolfman become when the wolfbane blooms and the moon is shining brite.

I went outside last night about 10pm pdt, faced east, and Mars was unmistakeable--really cool. So bright that it almost seemed like light rays emanating from it--like a giant spider in the sky. I had the goose bumps to realize that this is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Quite visible with the naked eye; in fact, better viewing for me than using binoculars (wiggled the image too much). I think you owe it to yourself--and your kids--to take a look at Mars.

"It's not going to attack us," she explained in her down-to-Earth way. "It's quite safe."

Yeah, right! That's what they told us after the October 30, 1938 invasion! It was on all the news broadcasts! But they've covered up the fact that we were invaded back then, assuring everyone that it was actually a "radio play."

Ha!!!! It was only due to the combination of our little friends, "the germs," and massive confusion from landing in New Jersey, that caused the invasion to fail...

Well, this time, I say we had better be ready, because when they come back, you know they'll be prepared!

Muttly LIKE Mars.

Thank you for trying to help protect Muttly from bad things. Muttly double...maybe triple already-installed tinfoil now. Thanks again.

Muttly always thought that Mars' moons named Bite and Bite Again....or maybe that was the Dog Star.

Unlike viewing the sun, watching Mars with the naked eye is fine, says James Lattis, director of the UW Space Place

Is our society really so damn stupid that the above statement needed to be included in this article?

On the 27th Mars will be the closest that it’s been in 60,000 years.
Mars pulls the earth a little farther out. Earth pulls Mars a little closer.
Start of the next ice age on earth ? And the rivers flowing on Mars once more?

FYI - Its closest pass will come on Aug. 27 at 5:51 a.m. EDT, when Mars will be less than 34.65 million miles away.

LOL...I thought the same when I read that. Unbelievable, isn't it? I can't imagine even the most scientifically unsophisticated have ever wondered about the safety of looking at planets without protective gear. ....Although unfortunately I've met quite a few who were completely unaware that our sun is a star.
