Stepmother's bail set at $100,000 (woman allegedly beat 18-month-old stepdaughter to death)

When Tiffany Jeffcoat picked up her husband from work Sunday night, her stepdaughter likely was already dead in the back seat of their vehicle, a prosecutor said.

Jeffcoat, 23, of 918 Hancock St., on Thursday was ordered held at Richland County jail. Bail was set at $100,000. A court date has not been scheduled.

She is charged with homicide by child abuse in Sunday's beating and suffocation of 18-month-old Akidrha Jeffcoat.

Akidrha was pronounced dead early Monday at Palmetto Health Baptist, but emergency personnel said she had died hours before, the prosecutor said.

Anthony Jeffcoat, Akidrha's father, stood in the courtroom near his wife, Tiffany Jeffcoat.

That show of support upset the child's birth mother, Akisha Trapp, 22.

"That hurt me," Trapp said outside the court. "It was our baby."

Anthony Jeffcoat declined comment after the hearing.

John Meadors, the 5th Circuit's deputy solicitor, said at the hearing that Tiffany Jeffcoat beat her stepdaughter seven times with a wooden paddle to stop her from crying.

When that failed, she put her hand over Akidrha's mouth three times, Meadors told Circuit Judge Thomas Cooper Jr.

Investigators say Akidrha was struck while Anthony Jeffcoat was at work.

Anthony Jeffcoat and Trapp were divorced, but Akidrha, who lived with Trapp on Byron Road, north of the Shop Road exit on I-77, spent some weekends with her father and stepmother.

Tiffany Jeffcoat's 9-month-old child was at the home but was not harmed, police said. He is in protective custody.

Investigators said Tiffany Jeffcoat took both children with her Sunday night when she picked up her husband from work at a fast food restaurant. Tiffany Jeffcoat carried her stepdaughter into the house, and her husband carried the 9-month-old, the investigators said.

Meadors told Cooper that Tiffany Jeffcoat said in a statement the two didn't realize anything was wrong until about 12:30 a.m. Monday, when they checked on their children.

Anthony Jeffcoat discovered Akidrha was not breathing, and Tiffany Jeffcoat called 911.

The Jeffcoat case is the third fatal child abuse case in the headlines since June.

Windie Edgeington, 25, was released on $1,500 bail after she was accused of giving her 4-year-old daughter a narcotics cocktail of Demerol tablets and NyQuil. Edgeington was charged with homicide by child abuse.

Last week, Edgefield police charged Mary Christina Dey, 17, and Devin Antione Watson, 22, in the death of 13-month-old Darrell Watson. Edgefield police chief Ronnie Carter said he thinks the case merits the death penalty.

During the hearing in the Jeffcoat case, Trapp's father, Richard Trapp, said he had hoped for the day when Akidrha would be his fishing buddy.

Friends of Akidrha's birth mother said she would show off pictures of her daughter.

"She's a good mother," said Kim Seibles, 29. "She's always talking about her baby."

How would you like to be the husband/father in all this? Your wife carried the dead body of your daughter into the house and put it to bed knowing the kid was dead. Or maybe she was too stupid to figure out that the kid was already gone, I don't know.

South Carolina doesn't have a monopoly on child-killing dumb biznitches, but Lord, we do have a bumper crop. (See Susan Smith.)

Step-mom should get life for killin' the baby.

Mom & Dad, however, need to be fined for the poor child's stupid name.

It could have been worse - it could have been Monica.

Or Hillary. (Named after Sir Edmund Hillary, of course.) </sarcasm>

The birth mother uses "it" to refer to an 18 month old baby? I have a seven month old, he is definately not an it.

Can this guy pick his women, or what?
