Can anyone tell me about how many city blocks to the mile?

In NYC? If memory serves, it's 8 to the mile.

Thanks,we were guessing five to the mile but I rarely get near any big towns.

20 to the mile north south (22d st to 42 st = 1 mile). About 5 or 6 east west (1st ave to 7th ave = close to a mile)

I seem to remember 7 blocks east/west or 20 blocks north/south. (The blocks are rectangles: except those near Broadway).
