HA! I was there. It was a riot. I went looking for the news photo of the smashed car, it was a brand new (1971, I think) Buick. A big chunk of that whale landed right on top and flattened it.

And so you know that's not the only place where such a thing was ever done, there is this:

But bad as all that was, 15 or 20 years later we had a mass beacing of maybe 20 whales at the same site (b.t., if Im not mistaken, you were there for part of that).

Remembering how the 1970 episode turned out, this time officialls bulldozed the whole bunch of them into a pile, covered them with old tires, poured on diesel fuel, and lit them off. I can tell you without a doubt, the pile of whales burning for several days smelled a lot worse than it did back in the good old days when they blew them up.
