'But my kids, if they become successful, they won't look down on people who are poor.
I grew up poor - dirt poor, often wondering where the next meal was coming from. This was due to a father who wouldn't keep a job more than 6 weeks and a mother who refused to work. I quickly learned what not to do, and have been successful in my own life being the opposite of my parents. I'm sorry, but I do look down on poor people - most of the time, it's their own poor life choices that put them there.

Absolutely ditto. I grew up poor as poor gets. I learned that success in life was only going to be by my own determination.
I look down on most (not all) poor people because most don't have the good sense to quit making stupid decisions that keep them poor.

You are right. A lot of this is due to poor life choices. I couldn't help but notice the family with four children who lost everything when the husband lost his job.
If you're going to have that many children, you certainly should build up some savings.
