ATTENTION
Big doins right now on high desert ATAC. They're surrounding a house in the vicinity of 200 ST E and AVE R.
"be advised we've got no cover and are sitting ducks if he's scoping us.."
"we need more units!"
They're surprising the location.
Sounds like they might think they got him, getting SB involved.
Air ship on scene.

The kind that legends are made of....
Okay, the kind that stories are made of....
Short stories.....?
Occasional passing comments?

I can tell you that not being an amateur astronomer I still find y'alls ability to view an object that is moving from a perspective that is moving amazing. Its apparent motion is relatively slow, and very predictable. Once you find the object, many contemporary scopes will automatically track it. Some will find the object for you. You may have fun if you can find a star party that is open to the public near you- you will see amazing things. :-)

Did the man's house burn down or no? Guess we have to rely on the press, now. Scary.
To: lainie
AP says: "deputies attempted to end the standoff by firing tear gas into the house and assaulting the structure with a huge, mechanized battering ram. They were met with gunfire before the house erupted in flames."
As you all know, it did not happen that way.
"Police scouring the remnants of a house that burned down in a shootout with a suspect in the slaying of a sheriff's deputy found a body they believe to be that of the killer. The partially burned body was found early Saturday near the remains of a burned outbuilding, Deputy Johnie Jones said."
House or outbuilding?

I am hoping that the scanner chatter was not deliberate misinformation to throw off the perp since he had a radio. I would feel so...duped.
Press accounts and scanner accounts definitely don't match up.

I just watched the 11:00 p.m. news coverage again. The house looked okay in their pictures. Funny, the reporter said it as fact that this whole property belonged to "a friend of the suspect." He had probably been listening to them refer to the man as a friendly. :)
In the pictures, several outbuildings were burning. They must have been magic tear gas canisters, just like those ones in other places.

(This is OUR country; let's take it back!!!!!)
It's amazing how many papers out there just reprint others' headlines. "House burned down.." is a theme. Far as I can tell it didn't happen, but I'll have to wait til I find a current photo, I guess.

Not many houses in the area at all. Mostly "hispanics". I've got a house in escrow a half mile away that is in excess of 2000 sq ft on 5 acre lot.

Any time you lob "tear gas" into a building there is a high probability it will start a fire. We had one in Lake Elizabeth with a baricaded susp the caught fire when I was still working. Thats what did the SLA in South Central.

I feel so bad for the deputy. Maybe he was taken out because of this problem with the counsel. Just because the killer was crazy doesn't make this aspect of the story go away. Crazy people are easier to manipulate, maybe someone put him up to it. Either way, it makes me feel very bad that the deputy had such an awful experince with local politics prior to his killing. I'm sure he must have thought that when he realized he was being ambushed. That's really terrible.
To: lainie
Are the landowners going to get some compensation for the burned structures, or are they going to have to sue and take their chances?
Great thread -- thanks for the ping. Next time our local SWAT team holds a "party", I'll host the thread and the scanner stream.
