The old church..aka Orthodox Church allows divorce as last resort for marriage, after extensive council. Catholic change this, along with change of parish priests not allowed to marry. Issue was not divorce though but definition of adultry. If one not married or never married then how one adulterer?

Sex outside of marriage makes one an adulterer.
It is man who has changed the definition to mean those who are married and have sexual relations with someone other than their spouse.
