We kids all loved it when he would sit us down in front of the chalkboard and illustrate and sing "Schnitzelbank".
"Ist das nicht der Schnitzelbank?" he'd say.
And our reply, "Ja, das ist der Schnitzelbank".
....Oh, du schoene, oh du schoene, oh, du schoene ....
Good memories.

Oh WOW!
My Grandpa had only one hand, from a hunting accident when he was younger....which has nothing to do with this. Ahem!
Anyway, we could COUNT on him having STORE BOUGHT (!!!) powdered sugar donuts in the fridge for us. Always and always.
And my Grandma let us eat the cookie dough and lick the cake bowls...somehow, there was ALWAYS lots of the dough left. We could never figure that out, because at home, there wasn't much at all left over.
She died when I was five, so that really is the only memory I have of her. That dough...
Now....the grandparents on my mom's side of the family were far more aloof. Grandpa was fine, but quiet. Grandma...well, you couldn't quite please her.
