He neither wrote the stories or pretended that he did.
Bennett is a devout Catholic. The Catholic Church does not look on gambling itself as a sin.
Only improper gambling is sin.

I'm not against gambling per se. I am against State gambling as in state run lotteries.
To be fair my main gripe about Bill Bennett has nothing to do with gambling. Three or four years ago, when Hillsdale College (MI) had their problems with a suicide and the resignation of the college president, they were asking for Bennett's help in finding a new president. He made a very public announcement that he was washing his hands of the whole affair and, to put it bluntly, he cut and ran.
From what I can tell Hillsdale is back on track - no thanks to Bill Bennett.
