I think some mental illness is indeed genetic. Some other behavior that we ascribe to mental illness is nothing more than people satisfying their compulsions without having the constraints of society keeping them on the straight and narrow. In large part, the collapse of civil and decent society in America feeds the dark side, which allows many people to nurture their obsessions and present them as a form of mental illness. Imagine how the founding fathers would react to a gay-pride parade in Provincetown (MA) or on Castro Street (San Fran)
Unfortunately, in today's society, what used to be considerd devient or "wrong" is now considered perfectly normal. Blame the courts, the APA, the left wing sociologists, and the left-wing academics, plus a lot of the hollywood types. Have you seen the "real-life" stories on MTV and others of that ilk???? As a father, I'd like to strangle the producers.
